Hey all...Just wondering if anyone knows how long breakthrough bleeding usually lasts. I'm on the pill and I've been bleeding for over a week now and have a feeling that it is going to last until I get my period next week. Last month I experienced breakthrough bleeding as well, but it only occurred during my third week of active pills and so lasted one week before I got my period. This month it started at the second week of my active pills. I'm going to go in to talk to my doc about maybe switching pills...I'm on Alesse 28 and didn't have any problems for the first 4 months, but now in months 5&6 I'm experiencing bleeding. It's really frustrating me!

Hey,

I totally hear you on this problem as I suffer from breakthrough bleeding myself (always the third week). I am currently on Alesse 28 as well (it is notorious for causing breakthrough bleeding because it is so low in hormones). Breakthrough bleeding, depending on what it is caused by, can last a few weeks or a few hours and can occur at different times in your cycle. Generally, it's not dangerous but very annoying. Breakthrough bleeding was the only side effect I have from Alesse but it was enough for me to go to my GYN yesterday and ask for a different pill. He gave me two options: I could take extra estrogen or be his guinea pig for Loestrin24 (he gave me free samples to try for a few months).

Hmm...interesting about Alesse 28 being notorious for it - no one has ever mentioned that to me! Thanks for the info. Have you decided what you're going to do? With the extra estrogen, do you just take an additional pill for that with the Alesse or something? That might be an option for me, since I've had no other problems with Alesse. But the bleeding is definately enough for me to make some kind of change!
