Having Mirena IUD problems

Hi all, I had a Mirena UID put in 2 months ago. It was extremely painful to insert and have had cramping, spotting for 2 months now. I am fatigued, and have cramps pretty bad every day since. also, breaking out. Supposedly the small amount of hormones in IUD does not evene enter the blood so how can it be so hard on my system?? Has anyone else had this problem. Thx. Lu

What has your doctor had to say about it?

Aside from the spotting, has there been any other abnormal discharges that you've noticed?

Have you been tested for infections since having the IUD inserted?

Luckily, I had no problems after my Mirena IUD was inserted in December.

I've heard from other women that if you just stick it through.... things should get better. So I would say just stick it out for another four months and you should start feeling better! The beginning is the hard part.... but 5 years of protection is probably worth it.

Well thanks guys, I dont think I can give it another 4 months because the cramping gets really, really bad at times. I think I will give it 1 more week. My Dr. says that the symptoms are normal but not for soooo long. She suggestes another month then take it out if still is causing problems. Thanks for your time. Loudee

Hi-
I posted on this very topic a couple of weeks ago. I had the same issue as you only I stuck it out for 9 months and I'm sad to say things just got worse for me. I finally had the IUD removed last week. So far I have lost 3.5 lbs and am back to normal with no more cramping or spotting.
My doc did say that a small amount of hormones do get into your bloodstream with Mirena.
I really wanted the Mirena to work but it just wasn't the right thing for me.
DH is going in for a vasectomy tomorrow and we will be using alternative bc until he gets the clear.
Hope the Mirena works out for you. It's a great form of birth control if you can tolerate it but miserable if your body doesn't like it.

Thanks Beth for the response. I am going to give it another 2-3 weeks and then decide from there. But as far as weight gain, I was told since the hormones are not directly in your system and only in uterus that its not going to happen. But, I am breaking out too, I just wonder if maybe it does cause both breaking out and weight gain even if its say it doesn't. I feel like i have extra water weight too. Did you experience any breaking out or feeling of heaviness in your body. Thanks so much. LU

Hi,
Just try to hang in there...I have had the Mirena IUD for a year, and the first 6 months were really ruff on me....I was bleeding so bad that I was starting to feel dizzy. But a few months ago things started to get better. My cycles are still heavy but not as heavy as before and the cramping is no where near as bad as before...It has been a ruff year, I just hope that things get better for you and for me....
Good Luck To You...

My doctor actually warned me that I may experience weight gain with Mirena. She also told me that while I would not have a huge amount of the hormone in my blood stream, there is a lot of progesterone released from the Mirena within the uterus. That seemed to be enough for me. And yes, I did have some skin breakouts while on Mirena and I never have acne, not even as a teenager.
I tried the IUD because I don't tolerate the pill well but it seemed that I was still sensitive to the tiny amount of hormones in Mirena.
I started to do some internet research (I Googled -Mirena problems) when my spotting and cramping issues intensified a couple of months ago. Here is a link to a site that might be of interest to you:

Apparently there are a lot of women out there who do not respond well to Mirena. There are also a huge amount of women who have no problems whatsoever. I wish I was one of them!! :)

Good luck.

Hi, I just dropped by from the Housewives club board and wanted to comment:

I was on Progestrone BC pills and the symptoms you are experiencing are very similar to what you are discribing. just about 6 weeks ago I got the Mirena IUD and actually like it quite a lot. But to me, it sounds like getting used to the hormones which I had 3 months of the pills prior to the IUD. Yesterday I experienced my first cramping and AF for me is mainly spotting with one heavier day which actually was the last day. Shocked me.

Give your doc a call but based on my experience I would say it'll take 3 months for your body to get used to it. Remember it's a foreign object in there. BTW I wasn't on BC from age like 24 - 37

Thanks so much everyone for your input. I think you are all right, I did speak with my Dr. and she wants me to give it a 3-month wait and see, but if it is as bad as it was last weekend I just dont know if I wll be able to hang. And I am feeling like it is making gain wieght too. Thanks again Loudee

I am getting mine removed tomorrow. I had been getting sick (puking) every month then getting craping so bad I could not move... was NOT fun! My husband isn't happy but it has been more trouble than its worth.
