Question on IUD Removal

Hi all,

Mirena seems to be a popular topic on the boards lately. I got mine on Monday. My question is, have you all heard of anyone having their IUD *removed* very shortly after insertion? I very much want to call my clinic and ask for an appointment for removal, but i am embarrassed to do that because i had it inserted only 2 days ago.

Since Monday afternoon (the insertion) i have been feeling lousy - very lightheaded and very fainty. Yesterday night i was so lightheaded that actually fell down my stairs at home which bruised my arm pretty badly. I am usually very coordinated and have never taken such a fall!

Not too much bleeding, just spotting, but lots of cramping. The strings and device seem to be in place, not as if it is being expelled. But there is some bleeding and i generally have a panicked feeling about it being in place, and again feel very fainty (having to sit down often, lower my head, etc).

I apologize, because this is almost not a fair thing to bring to the board. Would it be so horrible for me to ask the clinic for removal after only 2 days?

I think you should probably stick it out just a little longer. I personally felt a little lightheaded after I got minera inserted as well, but that feeling did not last very long and I ended up being pretty happy with minera overall. Eventually I got it removed and switched to paragard because the hormones just did not agree with me, but if I didn't have so many issues with my weight I would have kept the minera.

In any event, I'm sure a doctor will remove the minera for you if you really want it out; and the removal is pretty painless, but if your doctor is like mine, she will probably encourage you to stick it out just a little longer.

Just my two cents!

I remember for about a week after having the IUD inserted... I felt wierd mentally... I just couldn't get it out of my mind that the Mirena was in there and it really bugged me. I actually felt like I could feel it. It was unnerving.

BUT... I stuck it through and I started to forget that the IUD was in there and I started feeling MUCH better about it. Overall, I've had a wonderful experience... so I would stick it out for a while longer. Two days is really very early in the game... you are still just getting over insertion. It will be very different for you in just a couple weeks.

Hi all,

Sigh. Yesterday, a week after insertion, I went in and had the nurse practioner remove the Mirena. Since insertion all last week and this weekend I was fighting lightheadedness, some scary moments of nearly passing out, and by Sunday night I was in a panicy state over the thing. I was overcome with a feeling of vulnerability of it being in there and wanting it out. Plus I've been bleeding and bleeding, which the nurse explained was the progestin causing my uterus to shed its lining, but I just couldn't get over the irrational reaction to abnormal bleeding.

I know I should probably have stuck it out, because what are my reasonable alternatives to the pill? All today I have been feeling regret, that I really squandered a great opportunity to have 'built-in' contraception.

The crux is that the birth control pill has killed my libido and is causing mood swings and depression for me. I just want to go off any hormones, immediately.

Maybe I should try the copper IUD (Paragard) at some point in the near future. But I fear that my clinic will not do it a second time because I had the first one removed so soon (I have an HMO and my insurance does not apply to other places). But maybe the copper will be better for me without the hormone, and maybe the second time I will know what to expect.

Thanks you all for being here.
