Is this true? re: mini pill

I am breastfeeding my 7 week old ds and just had my check up with my dr yesterday. He prescribed Camila (Nor QD) for me, told me it was either this or the IUD which I had before and it went through my uterus. He told me the best time to take it was in the morning or the afternoon because if you take it at night it won't do any good. Is this true? I know the importance of taking it on time every day, but I had never heard that there is a better time to take it. Quite frankly if I have to take it in the morning or afternoon I will forget to take it all together. Also, are there any other choices besides the mini pill and IUD? I thought there were, but couldn't remember. Thanks for any help.

Hi Tiffini,
Congrats on the new baby!

I answered your post on bf board. Now, I am 99.9% sure that the time of day doesn’t matter with minipill as long as you take it at the same time each day. I believe it has to be within 30 minutes of when you took it the previous day.

Just to let you know, depo provera and the barrier (non-hormonal, like condoms) methods are also options along with minipill and IUD. I’m not having any trouble with depo but lots of women do. I would prefer IUD but dh was very opposed to that. I’m hoping that the rumors are true that Implanon will be out 4th quarter of this year and I can get that. It’s an implant that goes under the skin of the upper arm similar to Norplant and I loved Norplant. (Implanon is available in many countries but not USA at this time.)

Let us know what other questions you have.

You can take the minipill at any time of the day, as long as you take it at the same time every day.

I took the mini pill a couple of years back, and I read everything I could find about it at the time. Here's a really good article talking about how the mini pill works:

http://www.contraceptiononline.org/contrareport/article01.cfm?art=82

They have some good information about how important it is to take the mini pill as close to on time as possible, and they have this to say about the best time of day to take it:

"Provided the POP is taken at the same time every day without interruption, the time of day is not crucial. However, the cervical mucus effect—considered to be one of the key mechanisms of action—is believed to peak about 4 hours after ingestion and remain present for 16 to 19 hours. Consequently, taking the pill at bedtime theoretically could reduce contraceptive efficacy, assuming that bedtime is the most likely time of intercourse. Some investigators have dubbed POPs the "teatime" pill, recommending they be taken in the late afternoon or early evening for maximum efficacy at bedtime."
