Considering IUD, but have concerns

Well, the first short term concern I have is how painful the insertion will be? Also, I am worried about ectopic pregnancy or getting pregnant period. I have never had an ectopic pregnancy, but heard it can happen.
The insertion is painful for some, but not others.
As the other poster said, the insertion isn't exactly fun, but it is so short I don't think it is something to really be worried about. I have had both the minera and paragard IUDs. I tried minera first, and the insertion was somewhat uncomforable. When I got the paragard put in, I took 2 advil before the appointment and I think it made a big difference. So I definitely recommend doing that. After both appointments I was able to drive myself home and carry about my day pretty much as normal, so it was not a big deal.
I'm not sure how to respond to your concerns about etopic pregnancy. It just isn't something I worry about, to be honest. The possibility is there, but the possibility of getting pregnant in the first place is so slim that it's not something I personally ever worry about.
Anyway, I hope that helps!
The insertion for me was quite painful, but it was essentially just really bad period cramps, so it wasn't awful. And I did not take anything before hand. Also, eating before the insertion can help reduce the pain (I went on an empty stomach).
As far as the pregnancy question, I have a Mirena, which according to PP is 99.9% effective, so I never really worry about getting pregnant.
Good luck with you decision,
Allison
I had a VERY painful insertion.... but it has been well worth it! I really love the IUD, now that it's in! Ha! I probably had such a painful experience because I've never had kids. So far I have not had any pregnancy scares. My Mirena IUD seems to be working perfectly.
