More NuvaRing questions :-)

Ok, so it looks like I'm about to join the NuvaRing club we've got going here, lol. ;) My midwife just prescribed the Ring for me and I have a few questions....I read the pacakge insert and I just want to make sure I'm understanding everything right!
- I'm switching to NuvaRing from the Pill (Aviane/Alesse). I was only on the Pill for one cycle, and I just started my first placebo pill today. I've taken all of my pills on time without missing any. NuvaRing's instructions say if you're on the Pill, you can start NuvaRing anytime but no later than the end of the hormone-free week on the pill. So my question is, should I wait until my last placebo pill to insert the Ring? If I do that, do I need backup birth control at all? Is it better/safer to put it in earlier than the last day of placebo pills? I do want to at least see if I get my period (should happen in the next day or two). So can I wait another day or two to see if I start my period, and then put the Ring in? Or is it better to just put it in now, before my period starts....or will that prevent me from getting a period? What happens if I put it in on say day two of my period - will that stop my period or mess it up somehow?
Also, I'm totally paranoid about it slipping out. Is this something you would notice easily if it slips out? Should I check every day to make sure that it's still in there? It seems like it would be so easy to overlook it if it slips out (they should make it bright neon green or something so you can at least find it if it falls out!).
Sorry for all the questions - you can tell I'm new at this!! :-)

When I switched to the ring, I inserted it on the day I would have started a new pack of pills.
I have been using it for a few months now and anytime it is slipping down I can definitely feel it. It is kind of like if a tampon is too low or coming out. I have never had one slip out unnoticed and only felt it heading south a couple of times, not a big inconvenience. I did check it pretty frequently and came here to question if it was in the right place in there - it seemed to low, I thought it would be shoved waaaay up there, but it just likes to hang behind the pubic bone up near the front. Good luck!

Thanks everybody for answering my questions! :) This board has been really helpful. I took my last active pill on Saturday and after stressing for a couple of days, I finally got my period yesterday (Tue). I'm going to insert the ring on Saturday I've decided. From what the directions say, I should be fine and not need backup if I do that (altho, I'm so paranoid that I'll probably use backup BC anyway, LOL!).
Thanks again!
