Hi Rosie,
Although I find it interesting I have not tried it. Until someone answers your post, try searching in the "find messages about" box at the top of the page. Search on mirena. There have been quite a few posts about it.
Good luck.

Hi Rosie,

I had the Mirena IUD inserted in December of 2005. I was having my period every five weeks or so. The flow was very light, but the period did last a little longer than it was on the pill. I don't mind though because the flow is so light I've only needed a pantyliner. I'm waiting for my period right now, and I haven't gotten it yet. I wasn't really keeping track of days but I think I'm over due for it. I don't think I'm pregnant as I've heard from many women that it's normal for your period to eventually stop after while on the Mirena. If that is the case, I'm going to continue to LOVE this! One thing is that I still do have cramps with my period and they are more painful than the cramps I had before I had the Mirena inserted... but I just take some advil and I'm fine.

Overall, I've had a positive experience with the Mirena. Lighter (or non-existant periods), cheaper, sex at any moment! This Mirena has really saved me money. I only had to pay $130 for it and it's good for five years! I was paying $420 a year for birth control pills before!

My husband says he can feel the string poke him during sex every once and a while... but it's not enough to bother him. Our sex life has seemed to be even better now that I'm not orally taking hormones. Mirena does release progesterin right into the uterus... but my sex life has not been affected. I want it more than ever.

This is also a great option for me because of a gene mutation that causes me to have blood clots more easily, so I needed to get off of estrogen birth control.

The only bad thing about the IUD... I will say that insertion hurt like HECK!!! It was the worse, most intense

Hi!!

Thanks for your reply. I think I am going to go with the Mirena. I have done the birth control pills and I'm just not very good with them. I have done the Depo, twice, first time was years ago and the second time was just recently. I only had the chance to get one shot because I missed my appointment and in those 3 months I gained about 20 lbs. I am a heavy girl and 20 lbs extra is alot!! And it didnt help with the sex drive, it was pretty much non-existent. The cramping you mention I dont mind since I have always had them pretty bad with my period so I'm ready for it ;) And the not having insurance is another issue since its a one time cost aside from bi-yearly check ups. Seems to suit me just fine :) I hope my SO doesnt have any problems with the string but even if he does occassionally encounter it, he probably wont complain since it will mean not having to break the mood and get up and find the condoms in the dark....lol Again, thanks for the info!! If you think of anything else I should know before hand about it please let me know, better to be forewarned :)

Thanks,

Rosie

Well I'm a bit late on this, but wanted to share my experiences.

Hi,
I've had mine in since January 20023. I had it placed at my 6wk post partum visit after my third child. Personally the insertion was nothing. I remember the clamp on my cervix being a little uncomfortable but it was for a few seconds. I would imagine if you didn't have any kids or had c sections it would be more uncomfortable. It caused me to spot for a few months. That was a pain. Now my periods are very light. Sometimes I don't even need a pantyliner. Dh has never said he could feel the string. It has been fine for me. I either need to have it changed in Jan 2008 or convince dh to have a vasectomy.

Ruthann

Cheers,

Ruthann
