Silly Question

Alright, well I have a silly question that has probably been asked numerous times.
I was talking to my friend the other day about the birth control pill and she told me that doctors only tell you to take your pill at the same time so that you don't forget to take it. She said it doesn't really matter when you take it, as long as you remember to take one that day.
So first question, is this true or do I really have to take it at the same time every day?
Now say my friend was wrong and I do have to take it at the same time, how big the window or time before/after the set time chosen is it safe to be taking your pill and having it still fully work (as in not be considered as a missed pill)?
Thanks in advance!

I agree with Janet--we've heard of doctors telling patients that before, but we have no idea where they came up with that!
