Got the IUD (again!)

Hi all,

Just wanted to share my positive experience. This morning i mustered all my bravery and went back into the clinic to get the IUD again! This time i chose the Paragard, to avoid hormones (i have marked side effects from the pill).

Insertion was good, and she didn't use a needle, so i was spared that pain. But the sonometer that measures the uterus was pretty crampy and painful, as was the insertion. Not again until 2016 if all goes well!

Afterwards, though, i had a fainting episode. Leaving the reception area i had to sit down and then ask them to take me to a recovery room, where a nurse and then doctor monitored me. I have had the 'vapors' before under other circumstances, and my blood pressure is haywire, so i was not surprised or alarmed by this - just grateful that they gave me a place to lay down for a good long while before going back to the office. (Total time in the clinic was 2.5 hours, with the actual insertion over after half an hour).

Since then, though, i've felt okay. Am not used to the heavy periods, so i may yet be coming back here for moral support, gals! Hopefully i can help others too.

I'd love to hear updates on how you like, or don't, the Paragard--I get mine next week. =)

Hi Tortoisegirl (i love the screen name!),

Okay, if the board doesn't mind, i'll keep you posted on how this week goes for me. Day 2 today and absolutely no pain or discomfort - just some continued spotting that feels normal but is heavy enough for a pad.

About the fainting spell - i am sure it was idiosyncratic to *me* - in other words don't let it put you off! The other factor that surely contributed to it is that i had a sleepless night the night before (just work stress keeping me awake).

What day next week is your appointment?

Good luck fuchsia -- just remember you might feel a bit crampy for the first few weeks, so be patient and take it easy. deep breathing is helpful and a heating pad can be nice too.

If you find yourself feeling anemic at that time of the month, I highly recommend this supplement (you can find it a well-stocked health food store): http://www.florahealth.com/flora/home/canada/products/r4771.asp

I hope this works out for you!

Thanks for the tip - I'm trying to brace myself and prepare for the worst - my last normal non-pill period was 10 years ago, and that was bad.

How did it go this week for you - did the doctor relate your symptoms to something other than the IUD?

Speaking of yoga, i wonder if certain yoga practices can help a heavy flow... Both Gita Iyengar (in Yoga: a Gem for Women) and Patricia Walden (in A Woman's Book of Yoga and Health) have yoga sequences designed to help alleviate heavy periods. Patricia also has a sequence for immediately *after* your period, to help dry you out so to speak.

Tortoisegirl,

Just an update. So far so good! For about 5 days (Wed through Sat) i had bleeding that was heavy enough for a pad, like a period (although i wasn't on my period). So that was a little alarming, and i had to keep reminding myself that bleeding for a few days is normal. Then, on Sunday, the bleeding completely stopped. As of today it feels fine! No other symptoms whatsoever.

Let us know what you decide and how it goes on Friday. If you have any questions you can ask them of me here!

Thanks for the update! Glad you are doing well. =)

I got an IUD question for anyone that can answer--it's kinda weird though... Is there a chance you could get the IUD string mixed up with a tampon string and pull the device out? Sometimes I tuck my tampon strings inside. Is that something I should avoid with an IUD so I won't have any mixup?
