Got the IUD (again!)

Hi all,
Just wanted to share my positive experience. This morning i mustered all my bravery and went back into the clinic to get the IUD again! This time i chose the Paragard, to avoid hormones (i have marked side effects from the pill).
Insertion was good, and she didn't use a needle, so i was spared that pain. But the sonometer that measures the uterus was pretty crampy and painful, as was the insertion. Not again until 2016 if all goes well!
Afterwards, though, i had a fainting episode. Leaving the reception area i had to sit down and then ask them to take me to a recovery room, where a nurse and then doctor monitored me. I have had the 'vapors' before under other circumstances, and my blood pressure is haywire, so i was not surprised or alarmed by this - just grateful that they gave me a place to lay down for a good long while before going back to the office. (Total time in the clinic was 2.5 hours, with the actual insertion over after half an hour).
Since then, though, i've felt okay. Am not used to the heavy periods, so i may yet be coming back here for moral support, gals! Hopefully i can help others too.

Hi,
We had our IUDs the same day nearly! Mine was last Tuesday morning.
No, i've not had lower back pain at all. I don't know whether spotting after 7 days is normal or not. My experience was 4 or so days of period-like bleeding - it was so heavy that i wouldn't call it spotting. Then on Saturday night the bleeding stopped abruptly. I would suggest you call your doctor - at least she can assure you if there is nothing to be concerned about.
Can you feel both strings? I can feel only one and don't know whether to be concerned. However, i am going back in a few weeks for a check-up: did your doctor tell you to make an appointment to come back in 30 days, so she can check to make sure it's in place properly?

Hi Tortoise,
My IUD strings are so high up in my vagina that I have to insert an entire finger to feel them. While with a tampon, the string is hanging outside of my vagina... so I don't think I would confuse the two.
I would be concerned with the IUD string getting caught on the tampon itself and possibly being pulled. That's why I've choosen not to use tampons since I had the IUD inserted. Plus, I don't need it! The IUD has made my period so light, that I only need a thin pantyliner.

Hi
I just got back from Planned Parenthood and everything went really smoothly! It barely hurt--just a bit when she had to clamp my uterus or something. I have a little cramps or something, but I've taken Advil, so not bad at all. =)
I'm looking forward to 10 years with my new friend Paragard. Hating the three days of wearing a pad though... I haven't done that since junior high. They want me back in 6 weeks for a check up.
I was in and out of the place in 45 minutes...mostly paperwork, paying, and waiting though. The insertion was about 10-15 minutes on the table. She said I was one of the lucky ones with few cramps and not feeling faint. I was surprised I didn't feel faint because I can't even give blood because of that!
You girls have really got me considering an IUD now... I'll be keeping an eye on this discussion and others... keep us posted on how it's going with you...
I once had a colposcopy and the doctor was amazed at how well I came through it. She said she had women in tears and passing out from it all the time and I didn't even really notice anything being done. So I'm thinking I'd probably do ok with this too...
Of course I'll get my hopes up and this new doctor won't agree to it and I'll be back on the pill before I know it. Hope not though...
Hi tortoisegirl, welcome back!

Hi Tortoisegirl!
Congratulations! Wonders that you didn't feel faint or anything - just jumped off the table sounds like - the opposite of my experience. Are you still doing okay today?
We should form a little paragard club! I think another gal on the board adajennymay got hers last week the same time as mine. Soooo....we'll all be getting our first iud periods around the same time maybe. In case they're real bad we should come here for support.
cheers,

Yeah, I'm fine today! =) It's weird to have mild off and on cramps. (never really had them) I haven't taken anything because I have a high pain tolerance and more pain meds in my system is bad for my headache potential (rebound headaches). Wearing a pad is really the worst thing I'm going through.
Today I'm going out the mall and stuff. I'd rather be out swimming but oh well. Yesterday I drove four hours to my parents house in traffic with cramps so that was annoying. No heavy bleeding either--my period is just continuing as normal too. I have really long ones normally so I expect a few day still. (I am not regular so who knows when my next one will be after this off the pill, so hopefully I won't get worried)
Thanks for the support!
