Got the IUD (again!)

Hi all,

Just wanted to share my positive experience. This morning i mustered all my bravery and went back into the clinic to get the IUD again! This time i chose the Paragard, to avoid hormones (i have marked side effects from the pill).

Insertion was good, and she didn't use a needle, so i was spared that pain. But the sonometer that measures the uterus was pretty crampy and painful, as was the insertion. Not again until 2016 if all goes well!

Afterwards, though, i had a fainting episode. Leaving the reception area i had to sit down and then ask them to take me to a recovery room, where a nurse and then doctor monitored me. I have had the 'vapors' before under other circumstances, and my blood pressure is haywire, so i was not surprised or alarmed by this - just grateful that they gave me a place to lay down for a good long while before going back to the office. (Total time in the clinic was 2.5 hours, with the actual insertion over after half an hour).

Since then, though, i've felt okay. Am not used to the heavy periods, so i may yet be coming back here for moral support, gals! Hopefully i can help others too.

Best wishes--don't be nervous. The insertion really isn't that bad. I think most of it is dependent on your pain tolerance.

I am not really worried about the pain part of it. Mostly I think I am nervous about being off of the pill and trusting something else for birth control. The only birth control I have ever used is the pill. It's all I really know, and now I won't have that, and it's making me a bit nervous to think about it.

Ah ha. The strings are comforting for me. If it didn't have strings and I had no way of knowing it was still there, then I couldn't do it! Would looking at statistics help you? IUDs have just about the same effectiveness as the pill, actually better because of less human error. (forgetting pills) Hopefully you have a reasuring doctor who can talk you through the whole thing and answer questions, etc.

Hey there,

I am sooo glad that have stumpled across this message board. I had my iud insterted on Monday. slight cramping that was it!! I had a few ?'s maybe someone could help me out. How soon after the insertion is it safe to have intercourse? Also, is there any risk of the iud being pushed up while you are having intersourse. My fiance is nervous about this. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreicated.

Jill,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I actually got the Paragard and it was inserted on the second day of my cycle. I started on Sunday, had the procedure on Monday. Another question, are vibrators, dildos sex toys okay to use with the Paragard. I guess I am nervous about causing injury. As you can tell I am new to this. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Melissa,

Don't be nervous! Just breathe deeply, take some tylenol beforehand, and don't try to jump right up off the table right afterwards, and you should be fine.

In terms of protection, i now feel way more confident with the paragard than with the pill. Paragard is statistically more effective (look at the data on http://www.plannedparenthood.com), and the aspect i am going to continue to look forward to, is not having to use a second birth control method now that i am on the iud. With the pill, i was so paranoid that i was always using vcf, today sponge, or a condom with every act of intercourse. Completely cut down on spontaneity. With the iud, because of the statistical effectiveness and less chance of user error, it's just the iud.

Keep us posted on when you have your appointment!
