Generic bcp

Hi,
I'm new to the board. My health insurance insist on giving generic pills. I used to use triphasil. In 2003 after taking the generic band for it for couple of months I decided to go off the pill to have children. Now I have 2 children and do not wish to have any more. I had the doctor prescibe only brand name pills. Since triphasil is not being manufactured, the doctor prescibed ortho micronor. The insurance company does anything they can possibly do to allow only generic. Now I have Camila which is the generic version for Ortho Micronor. Do any of you take generic bcp? What do you think about them? I'm really afraid to sex with my husband since I do not want to have any more children. Thanks.

I don't take generic bcp, but I'm pretty sure that it is supposed to be as effective as brand name bcp, as long as the amounts of hormones in the pill are the same (it should say in your packaging information). Generally, I've heard about more problems with side effects from generic pills than from brand name pills, but if it works for you, there shouldn't be too much of a problem. If you know you don't want more children, why don't you consider tubal litigation, or vasectomy for your husband? Also, another option might be an IUD. I don't think those come in generic versions, and since you've already had children, most doctors will probably not have any problems with putting one in...
Also you could ask to go on YAZ or Yasmin. The company that makes them, Berlex (Schering AG) still has a patent on the progestin, so there are no generics of those two pills yet.
For information about generic birth control, I found this link: http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/2547.html, that may be helpful. You may want to talk to your doctor and do some more research, though, because I think there are conflicting opinions on this...
I hope this helps.
