NuvaRing was out for 4 hours!

I normally check to make sure that the ring is still in place after we have had sex just because I am paranoid but of course, last night I did not. I was freaking exhausted and had to be up in 4 hours. So when I woke up and went to the bathroom I decided to do a ring check and low and behold, it was not there! I found it in my sheets...grrrr!!! So my question is...in order to be completely protected I will need to leave it in for another 7 days while using back up birth control, right? I just started this on Sunday, so my 7 day using back up was almost complete. I just want to make sure that I am doing things correctly.
Also, my BF doesn't believe that I am right in saying that technically after 7 uninterupted days of me being on the ring that he will be able to come in me. I mean I know that it is 98% effective and all, so we are risking that 2% chance, but I just want to be 100% sure that I am correct. Any thoughts?
Right now he has just been withdrawing before he comes as our back up plan of birth control, he occasionally wears condoms, but we both don't like how they feel that well. BTW, he has been tested and I was a virgin going into this relationship so we are both 100% clean. Again, I know that since we are still risking a chance by having him withdraw, there is always precum that could get me pregnant as well. But anyways, my question is...if I have been on BC pills for 5 years, how come you need to use a back up method when you switch, wouldn't you just keep being protected? Or is it because your body needs to readjust to the different hormone levels in each different form?
I have asked a lot of questions, sorry! But any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
