Stoopid *$#@^(! Doctors!

So I called today to make the appointment for the IUD. The girl on the phone was asking me all the questions I've already answered with my own doctor about if I had kids, do I want kids, etc...

Then she tells me that the doctor there won't insert an IUD in someone that hasn't been pregnant.

So, I guess I'm back to where I was a couple weeks ago. I don't know what I'm going to do. I don't know WHY I can't do whatever I want with my own body. I don't know WHY people think that someday I'll magically want to have children... I won't!

I called my doctor and left a message asking what to do next. Of course, I got no reply.

Paraguard has been approved for insertion in childless women by the FDA.

This is directly from Paragard's website under "Get the Facts"...

"Now even women who haven’t had children can use ParaGard."

"The FDA has approved hormone-free ParaGard for women throughout their reproductive lives – from age 16 through menopause."

"Limitations on the use of ParaGard – such as women who had at least one child and those who were in a mutually monogamous relationship – were not based on scientific evidence. However, women who have never been pregnant are more likely to expel ParaGard than women who have been pregnant before."

Wow, I just wanted to say I'm sorry you're having such a hard time! That is really ridiculous. I didn't realize how easy I had it, actually, because I didn't have any trouble getting either minera or paragard (I've had both) and I'm only 24 (22 for Minera) and have never been pregnant. What area of the country do you live in? I wonder if that has something to do with it? Maybe the doctors in Chicago are just liberal! But, you know as a last resort, you can always go to PP and they will do it for you. It costs about $600, but still, that's less then you'll pay for the pill if you spend $10 a month on copays or whatever...

I hope you find someone with some sense soon!! Good luck!

I am in Miami. I would actually expect this treatment more from where I lived before (Alabama) than here... I was really surprised I got so many definite no answers...

I'll probably be keeping quiet around here until it gets closer to my appointment. Since I'm sort of in limbo about what I'm going to be getting done I really don't expect to have too much to say on the subject of birth control for at least the next month...

I may peek in from time to time though to see if there are more posts about Essure or IUD's...

i think some dr's don't understand the whole, "it's my body i should get to choose what to do with it" thing. my brother-in-law ran into that problem a couple years ago when he wanted to get a vasectomy. his wife was pregnant with their 3rd child at the time. 2 of those kids were an "oops" that he did not even want in the first place. he really wanted the procedure done but all the drs he went to refused to do it because they told him that he was too young (he was 27) and that he might change his mind some day and decide he wanted more. he insisted to them that he definatly did not want any more kids and they still refused to do it. he did finally find one dr that was willing to do it but even that one said that he had to wait until his wife had their baby and the baby was atleast 3 months old. the dr told him, "well, you never know. your wife might miscarry or the baby could die early on and you might decide you want to try again."

anyways, good luck in finding a dr that is willing to do what you want. i hope it all works out for you.

The opening to the uterus is bigger after you've had child. It makes getting it in more tricky. Both me and my friend have tried to get an IUD but the doctor was unable to get it in for that reason.

Just curious. Why won't doctors put in IUDs unless you've had kids?

Wow, that sounds like the doctor is going way outside his boundaries. They aren't supposed to make judgements like that, are they?

What if he was like melissa_jpf and simply didn't want kids? Are the doctors afraid he would sue them if he changed his mind? Why don't they just have him sign a release that says, "I choose to do this and too bad if I change my mind"?

I really hate it when doctors try to decide for you. Unless it's unhealthy, they should do what you want them to do, IMO.

Although we all wish doctors would do as we want, let's be real. There are a lot of people out there, I'm sure, who have SUED doctors for doing what the patient wanted. AND I'm sure the patients excuse was, "you should've known better, for MY safety". etc.

There are way too many people out there who play victims and blame others for allowing them to make their own decisions. I konw it sounds stupid. But let's remember how McDonald's got sued for serving hot coffee. All because one stupid person put it between her legs and burnt herself. Yup, she sued them....because of HER choice.

Although I feel for the OP and all that craziness and can totally understand/relate, let's also try to remember, the doctors are trying to cover their butts because there are a lot of ppl in this country who'll blame them, OR the IUD companies, for not "informing the patient that insertion of an IUD is done easier on a woman who's had a child".

Lastly, we can't choose what we want, unfortunately, because too many doctors have gotten sued for allowing that. Blame it on the idiots who sued for making their own choice.
