Question about Nuva Ring

I'm going to be starting Nuva Ring today. I have a couple questions. Today is the 3rd day of my period so can I still use tampons until it's finished even though I will be inserting the Nuva Ring later? Another question I have is that all the readings on Nuva Ring say wait 1 week until having unprotected sex... my doctor said to give my body a month just to adjust to the hormones... does it really matter if I wait? And my final question is when I got the rings, they told me to put them in the fridge... so I did... but then I was reading that they should be kept at room temperature. So I took the one out that I will be using and it's been stored at room temp. for a couple of days. Is this ok? Sorry about all my questions but if someone could help I would really appreciate it! Thank you so much.

Hi Beachbum,
You can use tampons when you have the ring inserted. Just becareful that when you remove your tampon that the ring doesn't come with it. If it does come out, rinse it in cool water and insert it again.
I've personally never had anyproblems with the ring coming out when I've still been on my period and used tampons.

You definitely need to wait 7/24hour days before you have unprotected sex after you start any birth control, Nuva Ring included. You do not need to wait a month. But the main reason for doctors suggesting you use back up the first month is so that just in case your period comes late or your body acts a bit strange (because of the hormones) you won't have to worry about accidentally being pregnant.

The thing about the rings being stored in the fridge at the pharmecists is that it helps preserve the rings (and hormones) until they are dispenced to us users. After they are taken out of the cold for even a while, they have only 4 months (I think it is that time limit, it should be written on your box) after the date of issue to be used.
I stick mine in the fridge...just because, but keeping them at room temperature is perfectly fine.

Hope that helps.

You definitely don't have to refrigerate them unless it will be above 86 degrees wherever you're storing them. Nuvaring uses the body's heat to activate the release of the hormones so that's why they shouldn't get TOO warm. I went on a driving vacation this summer when temps were above 100 degrees (fun!). I was on my period when we started out and needed to insert one while we were on vacation so that was an instance where it was important that it be kept in a cooler.
