ovulating

I know this will make me come across as an idiot, but could someone please explain to me exactly when women "ovulate?"
Because I got my period and started using my birth control that same day, and on the instructions it said that I would be immediately protected since I started within 24 hours from the time I got my period and that no back up contraception was needed.
Since it said that, I had unprotected sex that night, and even though my husband pulled out (Which is realize that, as well, was not a surefire way to be sure of not getting pregnant) I am just a little worried about being pregnant.
So, yes, I know I probably sound more than stupid since I went through my teenage years not even knowing when exactly I was ovulating...so someone, PLEASE help me!
Thank you lots!

Hi lovemonkeysss,
Jill
And very briefly, women typically ovulate somewhere midcycle, with your cycle starting on the first day of bleeding and ending on the day before you start bleeding again.
Also you can try another one - "Gegamon Menstrual Calendar".
