ovulating

I know this will make me come across as an idiot, but could someone please explain to me exactly when women "ovulate?"

Because I got my period and started using my birth control that same day, and on the instructions it said that I would be immediately protected since I started within 24 hours from the time I got my period and that no back up contraception was needed.

Since it said that, I had unprotected sex that night, and even though my husband pulled out (Which is realize that, as well, was not a surefire way to be sure of not getting pregnant) I am just a little worried about being pregnant.

So, yes, I know I probably sound more than stupid since I went through my teenage years not even knowing when exactly I was ovulating...so someone, PLEASE help me!

Thank you lots!

It depends on how long your cycles are, but it is usually for around four days in the middle of your cycle, give or take a couple of days.

And very briefly, women typically ovulate somewhere midcycle, with your cycle starting on the first day of bleeding and ending on the day before you start bleeding again.

You can use special computer programs to find the days when you are not fertile taking into account possible variations in your menstrual cycle. I've used one of such programs - "Advanced Woman Calendar" for 3 month. You can read about it at http://www.softorbits.com/awc
Also you can try another one - "Gegamon Menstrual Calendar".
