Thanks to those that gave me their opinions/experiences with the IUD!
I scheduled a meeting with my new ob/gyn in mid-November (her first appointment open! Good sign!). Just a consultation. The receptionist was very, very friendly and apologetic since I was on hold forever. Again, I'm taking a busy office as a good sign. My sis highly recommends the doc. Anyway, they are going to send me some info that I will fill out and take to my appointment. I just told the receptionist I would like to discuss my contraceptive options with my doctor.
What kind of questions should I ask? Besides the normal ones...and I have read that some women experienced weight gain, but it seems some women experience weight gain from everything so who knows. It's not listed as a side effect. But it is one side effect I'd much rather not have.
Someone asked me if I was considering a hormonal or non-hormonal IUD, and at this point, it's up in the air for me. I had painful cycles as a young teen, though they seemed to subside as I got older. But I did tend to have fairly heavy periods, lasting almost the whole 7 days even as a young adult. I went on bcp's at age 20, and have been on ever since. I am currently on a very low dose pill (generic Alesse) and my periods last usually 3-4 days, and it seems to completely stop at night (gravity?). They are pretty light. If my period were a little heavier, it wouldn't really bother me, though of course like any woman I'd rather not if possible. I guess this is where the hormonal vs. non-hormonal IUD debate comes in for me.
And thanks for the advice on when to schedule an appointment...I figure if I can do it in the afternoon, I won't have to worry about work (teacher) and my husband can come with and take me home and put me to bed like a good patient. I hate missing work for several reasons, but it can be arranged if necessary.
Anyway, I'll be around, and doing my research on the issue. I talked to my sis about it, and she seemed pretty supportive, though surprised I would go this route. Then again, she and her husband are only about 28 and 27, respectively, and they are going in for a vasectomy! And no, they have no children. They foster greyhounds ;) haha. The kid thing is still up in the air for my husband and me, we keep teetering on the fence, so I'd rather not do anything too permanent!
