Anyone really hate the IUD?

I've lurked here off and on over the years so now I'm posting. I've read down the boards searching for "real" info on Mirena (and I guess just IUDs in particular). You just can't get "real" info from a product's website!! The OB who delivered my kids recommended it 7 yrs ago but I declined since I wasn't sure I was done with my family. (Ironically, I was one of those folks who never wanted kids, agreed to one, ended up with twins and has wanted 2 more ever since. Hubby just isn't quite as sure! (And I know too many divorced moms of twins + that 1 extra kid....) So ladies, never say never when it comes to kids! They can be wonderful!) But I am now approaching that big 4-0 and even I have my limits.
I also have another quandry. Last winter, I switched from Loovral (which I had mostly used with good success since I was 23) to Ovcon 35. I was starting to have 2 periods a month, probably due to my age and changing hormones. The Ovcon 35 worked great for several months. However, since I was pregnant, I have been getting migraine-like headaches and tension HA. For the past year or so they have been getting unbearable and I was taking 15-20 Advil daily. Finally last April I got on preventative med Topamax. Thakfully it got me back to my baseline level but even though it is not supposed to mess up BCP at the lower lever prescribed for headaches, I now get my period during my 2nd or 3rd week of pills. I plan on discussing this with my OBGYN but I've been considering an IUD so I was researching it first. Today I learned my insurance does not pay for any IUDs so my cost will be $556 for the Mirena + possibly the cost of the office visit if that's not covered by insurance. A steep price if I don't like it! NOTE-I am well aware that the BCP might be contributing to my headaches and that's something else I plan to research and discuss with the OBGYN. But I also took them for 10 yrs with narry a problem - my headaches were my morning sickness during pregnancy and they've really just gotten much worse again in the last year or so.
Plus I still have teenage acne (not so bad since it does help one look younger :):) ) but I can't imagine how much worse it'll get without BCP if I switch to IUD. I do have my first "head to toe skin check" with a dermatologist in Nov. so I guess I can finally treat the acne then also.
I also have a history of yeast infections following my periods. This too started post pregnancy. OK, so maybe kids are a gift, but they can certainly mess up our bodies now, can't they?? So I'm wondering if that will be a problem for me too. I see it was a big issue for xploziv1. Not something I want to increase - it's bad enough to deal with as it is.
So I guess my question is, has anyone had an IUD, esp the Mirena (I'm not real interested in having worse periods with Paraguard...) and totally hated it? Had it taken out early b/c it was worse than other forms?
Thanks a bunch!
Diane

Hi Diane,
I have the Mirena IUD and I love it! I'm 26 years old and have never had children. I got married just over a year ago. I found out I have a genetic disorder that makes me more prone to blood clots, so my doctor recommended that I get off the pill (because of the estrogen) and try the Mirena.
There are a few things I love about the Mirena:
What I don't like:
Thanks a bunch! That was a great summary and I got 7 very positive feedbacks from my local twin moms board too. So I think I'm at least going to call for the appt to talk things over with my doc. I figure I had Lasik done for over $4000 (on the monthly payment plan) knowing I'd never break even with the cost of contacts and I love it despite the huge risk I took (very nearsighted), the pain of having it done (that valium did nothing for me at the time either) and 3 months of bad vision before in my glasses and 3 more after while it settled. So at least an IUD is reversible and I won't go blind!
I've seen your posts, and totally unrelated - I'm from GA too. Now in VA. But I went to Mercer (they gave me a great scholarship way back when). But my BIL and his wife are HUGE, HUGE, HUGE Bulldog fans. She went to UGA, actually, not sure where my BIL went - he joined the Navy out of HS and now is a nurse, we were already in VA by the time he became a nurse so he must have gone somewhere local down near Macon where they live. They have a little girl, just turned 2, and she's been born and raised at the games, much to the dismay of my MIL. Small world, huh?
Thanks again!
Diane
My experience was a bit different- I actually had the Paragard and had it removed early. It did considerably increase my periods after coming off BCP but the reason was that I had waaaaaaay too much info from my online research and I had gotten myself terrified of all the possible things that could go wrong, (in reality most message boards you find with info on stuff like this (this board EXCLUDED) you find only negative stuff - happy people usually don't go and rave about whatever it is) and was sort of waiting for something bad to happen. The stress got to me and I had it removed. I don't regret it but I do regret that I had gotten myself so freaked because the IUD is such a great birth control method. I am now stuck trying to get my DH into the dr for the big V. He talks like he is into doing it but he can barely make it home for dinner a couple of times a week so how can I get him in for 3 or more doctor appts?
Good luck- most people find that the cost evens out over the year and if you keep it the whole 5 years you will end up way ahead with not buying BCP.

Hi tucker317,
Yes, I did indeed have big issues with chronic yeast infections, which were kickstarted by antibiotics shortly after having my Mirena inserted.
