Hi wellesly,
I regularly post on a different board and dropped in to see if anyone else uses mirena. I've had it since 2003, it's good for five years, I could be wrong on that one though. For the most part, it's been working well for me. I used to have painful periods, now I have no periods at all. I believe it caused a little bit of weight gain for me. Other than that, I don't have to remember to take the pill, no pain of periods. I've been overly emotional and I still don't know if it's caused by the hormones that are released by mirena or something else. I would still highly recommend it.

Hi there!

I have the Mirena IUD and I love it! I'm 26 years old and have never had children. I got married just over a year ago. I found out I have a genetic disorder that makes me more prone to blood clots, so my doctor recommended that I get off the pill (because of the estrogen) and try the Mirena.

There are a few things I love about the Mirena:

  • It's cheaper for me. I was paying $420 a year on the pill. For the Mirena, I only had to pay $130 and insurance covered the rest. Plus, it's good for five years! What a bargain!!

  • I don't have to worry about taking a pill every day and all though Mirena releases progesterin into the uterus, I don't have the hormones in my blood like with how the pill works.

  • Sex is spontaneous.

  • Lighter periods that are farther apart. In fact, I think I will soon no longer have my period... as it keeps getting further and further apart.

What I don't like:

  • Since I've gone off the pill, my pre-pill acne problem has returned. I don't believe the Mirena is causing the problem, I believe its just because the pill is no longer preventing the acne from forming.

  • Even though I don't have much of a periods, I do have worse cramps... although I never really had cramps while on the pill.

  • The insertion was VERY painful!! I will not lie. It was the worse pain I have ever been in. However... I will say it was worth it. I was in dire pain for about 10 minutes... and then just nauseous for about five hours. But that's been it... and now I'm good to go for five wonderful

If you scroll down the outline, there is tons of info on various links on this board also. I spent some time last night doing lots of research here and on the manufacturer's website (not much info there) and got a lot of "real" world advice here.

I used it for almost 3 years and loved it...had some slight problems the first 6 months or so but that's somewhat common....After I had it put in my periods were longer and heavier (I had periods that lasted 14+ days and came every 2 weeks--major annoying) but they got shorter and shorter to at about 1 year I was basicly spotting for about a week...They eventually got to where I would spot 2-3 days for a period....so I loved that...I've always had heavy periods and it was so nice not to have to deal with it....

I was on Mirena for a year and gained 20 lbs from it. Most doctors will tell you that you don't gain weight, but I've read polls online that close to 75% of the people who get it do gain some weight.

I have had Mirena since April of 2004, and in the last year, have lost 40 lbs. I just don't want to make it seem like there is nothing good about it. I'm going to be sad giving up the no period thing, but hopefully, within 2 months I will be pregnant. WOOHOO!
