EC - Perscription Q?
| Sat, 09-30-2006 - 9:48am |
I havent really surfed around so I dont know how active it is but I really need a quick answer. I am young and I dont have medical insurance, and havent gotten a perscription since I was under insurance with my parents. I need to get an EC (emergency contreceptive) percription filled, and I realize that if I call PP they will call in a perscription to the pharmacy. So my question is can they call it up into any local pharamcy, do I need to have any kind of "file" under this pharamcy? I know thats a dumb question, I just dont want to call the pharmacy and ask and I can't really ask anyone becasue I dont want them to know what I need! TIA!

Hi hat678, welcome!

Just out of curiosity, how long has it been since you had unprotected sex and think you may have gotten pregnant? With Emergency Contraception you have to take the drug within 72 hrs after the unprotected act. If it's beyond that you're looking at the possibility of being pregnant. If you're saying youre 90% sure you're preganant, that sounds like you're already showing signs of it (tender breasts, missed period, etc.) , but that could just be my inferring. If it's been longer than 3 days since you think you may have gotten pregnant, you're out of the "EC Window". If you're pregnant at this point it may be something you will have to discuss further with your doctor and determine if you are indeed pregnant and then make the decisions of where to go from there.
If it has been less than 72 hrs (3 days) since your unprotected sex, you should still be in the window and i'd either call PP or your Gyno asap and try to get things moving.

Hm maybe the indication has changed. I had always heard 72 hrs, but it's not something i typically keep track of...
Can your doctor or another doctor see you on a short-notice appointment even though you haven't seen your gyno recently? How about your family doctor--I'm not sure if they typically handle the EC issues, but they might be able to see you sooner and prescribe medication for you. Good luck. Keep us posted
The ECP can be taken up to five days after the act, but after 72 hours the chance of it protecting against pregnancy is greatly reduced.
You can have a copper IUD inserted up to a week after unprotected sex, however it is more costly, and if you can't be 100% sure that you wouldn't have contracted an STD, then you are putting yourself at risk of a pelvic infection.
Yes, it is different now--it used to be 72 hours, but within the last couple of years it's been changed to 5 days.
