Nuvaring Opinions

I had a tubal about 3 years ago so haven't had to deal with birth control for a while. But yesterday during my annual exam my gyn suggested I do something to help make my periods lighter and more predictable. According to her many women my age (early 40's ) are using contraceptives for this purpose. She ended up giving me a Nuvaring prescription but I was wondering what people that have used it think about it? I've used lots of different kinds of birth control in the past (pill, diaphragm, IUD) but I hadn't even heard of this until yesterday
Thanks!
Linda

Hi lrvy, welcome!
Jill
I've been using Nuvaring for almost 4 years (pretty much since it was available in the US), and I don't have any complaints.
I will be starting the NuvaRing on Sunday, so I will be able to post a more indepth reply then. Judie, I am a beginning user and youre response intrigued me. You said, "The ring can be left in for 21-28 days, so if you need to move your period a week or even just a couple of days, you can leave the ring in a little longer. Unlike the pill, you're also not committed to a 7 day hormone-free interval, you can insert a new ring after only a few days." Can you explain that a little better for me please? Do you have to wait beofre doing that so you body can adjust. I get my period every 5 weeks, not every 28 days like a lot of women, so any suggestions or thoughts on that too?
Thanks!
jen
Thanks for the replies. I figure I've got nothing to lose so if I don't like the way it works I'll just stop. Now I'm actually looking forward to my period so I can start (never thought I'd say that!)
Linda
Once you start using the ring, or any hormonal birth control, you will have your period whenever you have removed the hormones for a couple of days.
Hi,
I'm new to the board and new to Birth Control and NuvaRing. My Ob/gyn reccomended it to me as I often don't remember to take a vitamin, let alone take a pill every day. I have been using it for several weeks and I'm noticing some mood swings, and vaginal dryness, along with spotting. But I understand these side effects usually end after the first few months, so I'm going to stick with it and see what happens. So far the dryness is the most annoying issue..has anyone else delt with this?

Hey!
I don't come by this board very often, so I just happened to read this. I tried Nuvaring about a year ago and about 2 1/2 mos. into it, my DH sat me down one day and said,"Hon, what's wrong?" and I burst into tears. That stuff turned me into a raving lunatic. I would be happy one minute and the next would feel like throwing something (I never did :)!). I tried for almost 3 mos. and ended up calling my dr. She said most people have less side effects on it, but for some it's worse. She also said 3 mos. was long enough to see how my body would handle it and that those reactions would more than likely not change. I removed it, and within 2 weeks felt completely normal. I know some people love it, but it was not for me. Your body just may not handle it well. Good luck!

I forgot to answer your other question - it actually had the opposite effect on me as far as dryness.
I just started using Nuvaring about a week ago. I agree with the last poster - I do not really have a dryness problem, it is more the opposite!
I have used hormonal BC for over 10 years and I have not yet noticed any big difference between the pills, patch and the ring in terms of side effects physical or emotional. I am always "emotional" i.e. irritable. I blame it on the hormones! ;-)
The only thing I do not like so far about the ring is that I can feel it during sex. My husband has not said anything about it bothering him at all, but I can feel it. I think it is due to the way it is resting in my vagina and when we have sex it is hitting my cervix. However if that is the only issue I have, I'll probably stay on it and just remove it during sex.
Hi all,
Well, I'm into month two, and the side effects are taming a bit. The dryness is a little better, and though it's had a slightly negative effect on my libido, my boyfriend says he really enjoys taking care of that problem, and doesn't mind taking as much time as I need. (I am such a lucky, lucky woman). We haven't slept together, so I can't say if it effects our sex life in that sense, but it hasn't interfered with anything else we've done. My period was much lighter, and less painful. How wonderful! Also, the dark discharge seems to have stopped, and that was the most annoying side effect I've noticed. Yipee!
