IUD and massive periods?
| Tue, 10-10-2006 - 9:09am |
I got the Mirena IUD a litte over a month ago. I thought that I got off easy, some horrible cramping for the first few days, slight spotting. But then all was fine until my period was coming. I got my period on time to the day, but I have been bleeding for 2 straight weeks! Its really heavy and just now beginning to ease up. Has anyone else experienced this? I have been searching for advice and seeking information, but nothing that has come close to explaining what I have experienced. I know that it takes at least 3 months for your body to get used to a foreign object, but this seems excessive.
What do you think? Any advice/information is appreciated...
Thanks!

Hi lovinmylife2004,
It can take a few months for things to settle down with your IUD, much like any other contraceptive.
Thank you for the reply. I was amazed at the lack of information or reassurance about this. I did call my doctor and they also said it was normal. I just don't anyone (other than my sister who got hers at the same time) that has an IUD. So I am truely in the dark about what to expect. I am hopeful that it settles soon.
again, thank you!
It took my body about a year to get used to the Mirena IUD. I had irregular periods during that time and at about the one year mark I started having painful periods. My doctor discovered cysts on my ovaries; most likely due to the hormones. I had never had cysts before and I haven't had them since. She said the cysts would resolve themselves and they did. After that, I really had no problem with the IUD. My periods were all but absent; I rarely had a "period" that just consisted of very light spotting. It was a very effective form of birth control.
Good luck and hang in there!
I've heard that the first few months of the IUD can be pretty unpredictable when it comes to a woman's period. You may have more spotting then usual or longer periods.
In my experience with the Mirena, I had longer periods (more spotting) but the flow was much lighter.
I'm sure your body will get it straightened out eventually. Give your body a good six months to get adjusted.
