Ok so this is my first period with the IUD. This is kinda graphic but I am freaking out! Yesterday morning I had a big clot in my period it was the size of a VERY large strawberry and then it was normal. This morning I have been bleeding very heavyly for the last four hours, soaking thru a pad every half hour to an hour! I am also having alot of cramping so I took some tylenol so hopefully that helps the cramping. I called my dr office but I am waiting for the dr to talk to the nurse I spoke with while I sit here and loose all my blood that I have! Is this normal I know they say it can get worse but how much blood is too much???? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Hi there...

I too am having the same period you are describing. This is also the first one I have gotten since I had my IUD inserted. Mine has been continuing on for the last 2 weeks! It seems to be slowing down, finally. Talk about putting a damper on ones sex life! I dealt with horrible cramps for the first week, getting relief from 800mg of advil. The cramps let up within a week (a full 7 days). I also soaked pads and tampons for many days and I am finally able sleep without a pad. My doctor told me that this is normal for the first 3 months! I am hoping that I don't have on going bleeding for that amount of time!

Hope this helped a little... Your not alone!

I had that happen to me on my first two periods with my IUD--expecting the third soon. I bought Ultra tampons by OB, and could wear those for an hour or two some days to give me some relief. They seemed quite a bit more absorbant than the Supers. I refuse to wear pads, so no idea how fast I would have gone through those. But, I did have several huge clots.

Thank you all for your messages. I had to work this afternoon from 2 to 10 this evening so I am just getting home and was hoping to find a message from the dr with some advice but not even a call which I am a little upset about! Anyway I did take the Tylenol and the cramps have subsided and I am not bleeding as heavly so hopefully it will just get better from here. Its just crazy that one can bleed so much and have it be ok! Is all the blood built up in the uterus or is it just bleeding? And why with the clots? I would have a small one once in a while but honestly it looked like my insides were falling out! I am really hoping this will get better as the months go on cause I am not sure if this is what is going to happen every month for the next ten years that I can deal! Any way thanks again and I will keep ya all updated!

Okay so Im very sorry to hear that you are having all the same issues I had with the IUD... I got mine In Oct. of 2004. I thought the same thing, that my body was just gonna get used to it, and my bleeding would slow down.. HAHA was I wrong.. I just got my removed after waiting 2 years to see if things would change. I constantly was bleeding 2 and 3 months at a time. I got mine removed yesterday and my bleeding stopped today!! Yay!! One thing that is great about it is I never got pregnant or had any of the side effects from pills, shot or whatever. It is def. a great birth control method. It either goes one or the other. Some women stop bleeding all together or you bleed all the time. My roomate has it and hasnt had a period in like a year. Lucky brat!! But me it was aweful..I always got infections. If you can stick it out a little longer I would, just to maybe see if your body will adjust. I wish it worked on me.. I loved everythign about it but the bleeding. Well honey ...good luck!!

agree with all the other good advice/experiences you've gotten....Not to scare you but sorta/kinda happened to me too...but mine lasted the first 3 months or so....After that they did ease up and get better....I hope you get some relief with the cramps....Those got better as time went on for me too...I had the Mirena for about 3 years and went from heavy heavy periods at first to basicly spotting for like 1-3 days if I had a period at all....so hopefully it'll get better for you...hope you hear from the dr too....good luck....

Heavy bleeding with the Copper (Paraguard) IUD is pretty common. Periods tend to be longer and heavier. Plus, it takes a few months for the body to get adjusted. So you may not see this settle down for a few months.

The Mirena IUD is the exact opposite. It's known to cause women lighter and fewer periods.

A co-worker of mine couldn't deal with the bleeding with the copper IUD. She had it removed and had the Mirena IUD inserted in it's place.
