Tubal Ligation Experiences

Hi all,

I've been a member of ivillage, but never used the message boards. I've been directed here for Message Boards where I can discuss Tubal Ligation. I will be 31 when I have my second child in December and I do not want to be pregnant again. DH is not open to a vasectomy, therefor, I feel my only option for permanent birth control is a TL. My OB/GYN is giving me very limited information, but when I specifically asked about the side effects of the proceedure, I was told that these side effects happen to MOST women... (specifically, I asked "what are we talking about here 4% of women are effected, 40% or what" her response sternly "NO. MOST Women") I am concerned about the side effects and also about Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome, which I've read not all Drs believe actually exist. I am looking for information/experiences of women who have had a TL within the last few years and can share some insight with me.

THANK YOU!!!
Nicki

Hi Jill,

My husband is in the military, and of course, they don't cover Essure. I'm okay with that, because I have done some online research about it, and I'm not completely comfortable with the statistics that they give on their site either (it requires a followup/corrective procedure in 1 in 7 women; no long term results yet etc)

Thanks for the links you provided. I'm going to go check them out right now!

Regarding side effects, my biggest concern is best described as painful cramping before your period (although, I've seen a long list of side effects, and there are PLENTY on there that also are of great concern)... I don't know that I can deal with 15-20 years of excruciatingly painful cramps, as I am not likely to enter menopause anytime soon. Again, with being in the military, I am not able to get a second opinion covered under the insurance, however, I will be speaking to the other Drs in the group about the lack of information regarding the procedure coming from their office. In the meantime, I am doing as much research as I can, and forwarding it to my husband, hoping in a change of heart from him (I'd like him to get a vasectomy)

I've also read a lot about PTLS, that is a major concern for me... ESPECIALLY since some Drs don't believe that it actually exists!

Thanks again, Jill!!

Hi Jill,

You caught me right before I logged off :) I am currently pregnant (would have the TL during my C Section if I have it), but I was never on hormonal contraceptives until AFTER the birth of my son 2 years ago. It caused soooo many problems that after 13 months on them (had to be switched twice, so used 3 different types) I had to go off of them (and of course, I got pregnant with my little princess right away!)

From what I've read, some(dare I say a LOT) of women have been on "the pill" for so long, they've forgotten what a 'real' period is like, so that is where some problems come in... Thanks for your input!

More soon,
Nicki

Hi Nicki,
I had my T in April this year. I did have a complication of her glazing my bowl but they called in a specialist and stiched me up and I haven't had any other problems. I have 2 kids and age 31 and knew I didn't want anymore children. I was on BC for 16 yrs and it was great because I never had a period, Unfortunatly it really killed my sex drive and after the TL I stayed on it because I didn't want the period. I have been off the pill now for about 2 weeks and I have noticed a big difference in SD and lubrication. I still haven't had a real period yet just some spotting and I am waiting for it because it has been so long and I hope that they arent bad from some of the things I have read. My doctor doesn't believe in the PTLS and said I should be fine so I am just waiting. I feel that the sex is better and I am very happy with my decision of having the procedure done. Good luck and let me know if you have any ????'S.
