I go for my 6 week check up on thrusday and have been trying to figure out what birth control I want to use. I was on the patch and really happy with that before. Is it safe to use while breast feeding? If not what do you all reccomend?
Thank you

Hi Debbie,

Congrats on your new baby. I, too, used the patch before getting pregnant with ds yes he was planned:) Unfortunately it contains estrogen and is not compatible with breastfeeding. You need to use minipill, depo, IUD, or some other progestin only or non-hormonal method of birth control.

I’m using depo and not having any bleeding or troubles, but lots of women hate depo. I’ve had two shots and ds just turned 6 months Saturday.

Good luck!

The bcp is approved for use in breastfeeding moms by the AAP. However, estrogen can/may affect your milk supply. Therefore it's recommended that an estrogen-containing pill not be started until breastfeeding is well established, baby is older than 6 mths old, and is supplementing their diet with solids.

The mini pill may also affect some womens' milk supply also.

So, I would suggest that you watch baby's weight gain. The hormones/milk supply link is different for every woman.

That being said I would start off with the mini pill and then move on to the regular pill once you start solids (6 mths + ). JMO!
