I got the ParaGard IUD recently. I am very excited that it is hormone free. The major side effect is bleeding in excess. Does anyone have experince with this, and is it very bad? Without birth control I only had a period every few months, and they were never very heavy. Do you think this may improve my chances of not being effected very much by this? I just want to know what to expect.

Bleeding after an IUD insertion is a very individual thing, it seems.

I've had mine for about 1.5 months. I am still pumping breast milk for baby and have not had a period in months. I had very minimal discomfort with insertion and not really any since. I have not had a period yet since I got it. Every once in a while I will have a little cramping, but it only lasts for a few minutes and may not even be related. So far, physicially it's all working out wonderful. I'm waiting for when I eventually get periods back to see just what they're like, but maybe by then I'll have it long enough that my body won't have the heavy periods/cramping.

I had the ParaGard for 2 years and I did notice an increase in my periods flow. But even after I went off my periods were still a little heavier.

I love this device. I had heavier than normal bleeding for the first 2 periods. I do not know that it is in, do not notice it during sex and love that it is hormone free. What I do notice it cramps and spotting a few days before my period, but that is the only side effect and I had it in exactly 1 year!

Good luck,

I would say my periods have become a little heavier (lasts for a full 7 days, but light for all but 2) than before; but I used hormones for most of my adult life, so it is hard to say for certain that the increase is due to just the paragard. I really love paragard, I will never use another type of BC again! I hope you like it as much as I do. Good luck.
