Exams for IUDs

I'm going in for my preparatory exam tomorrow to discuss if I can have an IUD inserted later in the month. Besides a pap smear and pregnancy test, what else is done during this exam?
Also, what is the procedure for inserting the IUD?
Thanks!

I just got my IUD last Thursday so everything is pretty fresh in my mind... I did not have an exam before my insertion. I had a consultation where we talked about my options and possible problems with not getting it in etc. I was up to date on my yearly pap so I did not need to get one and I was also on BC with no lapses for years so I did not need a pregnancy test either. With my annual pap I also get automatically tested for Chlamydia and Ghaneria something my gyno does for people under the age of 26. Since my partner did not change since the tests I did not need to be re tested. If you have not been tested for these or other STD's you will probably need to be tested for them as well.
As for insertion, you will have to me measures with a tool called a sound. It is this metal curved rod thing that does hurt when it is inserted. This is used to a) make sure your uterus is big enough and b) to show the doctor what depth to put the IUD in at. The actual insertion feels basically the same as the sound measurement. I personally jumped but it was a brief surge of pain then it was bearable. The strings are cut and the clamp that hold the area open is removed. I was told to lay there for a few minutes before getting up; this is because some people get dizzy from insertion. Then I was given help to sit up and a glass of water and then it was over. I did have cramps for a few days. I am still worried and kind of obsessive about seeing if the strings are still there but I am sure that will pass with time. Usually if it is going to expel it will do it within the first 2 weeks so after that I will probably relax. Hope that helped.
