Mirena IUD

Hoping anyone who has a Mirena IUD can tell me if this is normal. I got the Mirena 5 weeks ago. I chose it because I have been having a lot of spotting and heavy, long periods and the Mirena is supposed to reduce bleeding. I know it is supposed to take 3 months to settle down, but I haven't stopped bleeding since I got it. My period came a week early and lasted 10 days. Not too worried about that as it was the first one with the IUD. Anyway, I am now back to spotting, but it is weird spotting. There is nothing at night, but as soon as I get out of bed and start moving around upright, the spotting starts again. Also, the bleeding gets heavier when I exercise. Have any of you other Mirena users experienced this? It just seems like, because the bleeding gets heavier the more I move around that maybe it is being caused by the actual IUD pressing into my uterus and not by the hormones thinning out the lining. I don't know if that is even possible. The Dr. said if I am still bleeding after 3 months to let her know. Any thoughts?

Exercising will cause you to bleed more, purely because your lower abdominal muscles etc are contracting as you move, which often means you bleed more.

Thanks so much for your reply. It was just so weird I didn't know if it was part of the bleeding which will, hopefully, resolve, or if it was the iud itself. Glad to hear I'm not alone.

I have had the Mirena sice Feb of this year. The first few months I had very long (talking like 16 days!) very light periods that were comming every 18 days like clockwork. It was soooo annoying, I felt like I was always on my period for the first few months I had it. My heaviest bleeding times would be after the gym. I would also have random spotting in between. I was also getting vicious PMS and being down right evil to my husband for 2-3 days before my period would start (this was new to me, I never had problems with this before)

Now, I havn't had a period since the begining of August and the only time I spot is after the gym, but not every time, and sometimes after sex. I also no longer get the PMS. I really love mine since the endless bleeding has stopped (and the 3 days of turbo bitch!). I will probably get a new one in 2011 when it is time. Good Luck!
