I have been on the Nuvaring for about a year now and my only complaint is that I have no sex drive at all. This is really beginning to effect my marriage because we are newlyweds. It's not that I don't WANT it (because I do) but that drive just isn't there... So that's bothersome. I was originally put on BC because I have heavy periods. I've really begun to consider an IUD but I just wanted to hear the good and bad stuff from you guys first. I am 22, never been pregnant, don't smoke, healthy... I just don't know what to do!

hmmmm I was on the Mirena IUD for about 3 years and couldn't tell it affected my drive....I have heavy periods and went from heavy periods to barely spotting for a few days if I had a period with the Mirena. The first few months they were heavier and longer than usual but after about a year I was basicly spotting for a week as a period.Over the next year it got even lighter and shorter to where I was spotting for like 2-3 days for a peroid. And right at the end at 3 years before I had it taken out I was basicly spotting like 1-2 days at the most if I had a period at all each month.I loved it.Had great experiences with it for the most part...good luck in your decision.I've had heavy periods all my life so I know what you mean.....

Hi there,

I hope your dr. isn't as old fashion as mine, because some drs. don't like to give women who have never had kids an IUD. A woman who has never had kids has a higher possibility of expelling the IUD easier than a woman who has had. I went to 2 drs. and they both declined. I'm 28, don't smoke, never been pregnant and healthy as well. I have REALLY BAD normal periods when not on BCP and my dr. mentioned something that was also very interesting and that I've read many times on this board. The IUD gives you very heavy bleeding and or heavy periods/cramps as well (SOME). Of course most people love it and have no problems; but there's the, "everyone is diff." Good luck!

The copper IUDs can cause heavier periods, but the Mirena IUDs contain hormones and for many women reduce their periods down to next to nothing.

Hi,

I've had the copper IUD, and have been off OTC-lo, since August 1.

The drive is *much much* better, and my mood has improved, although the latter could be do to recently ending a very stressful interim job at work.

My period isn't too terrible yet: the same amount of flow, no additional cramping, but I have been getting a period every two weeks! (lasts 5 days each time).

There are drawbacks though: my acne has come back with a vengeance (the nasty cystic kind I had as a teenager), and I have more abdominal bloating, and my boobs have shrunk (with an A cup and a classic 'pear shape' this is definitely not flattering). These problems have been quite bothersome to me, so much so that I am thinking of going back on OTC-lo. But my main complaint on OTC-lo was melasma (skin darkening), so it's either that or acne it seems....

Or I just have to get off my lazy tush and actively battle the acne, which is quite difficult!

I have had my IUD for almost 2 weeks now. When they put it in I felt discomfort and cramping. Nothing major, almost as if I was going to start my period soon. I have also had some light spotting. The cramping went away within a few hours and I couldn't even tell anything had been done, but I still have light spotting. I would say that everything is great except for the fact that my husband keeps getting poked by the retrieval strings. The NP who put it in said that she left the strings long because they tend to get soft and flexible with the warmth and a longer length, in her opinion, poked men less. I'll go back and have my OBGyn take a look to see how long they are and maybe cut them shorter. I like the IUD would like to keep it, but if it's going to bug my husband, I don't see the point of using it anymore.
