Getting IUD Dec 8...

Very scared. I am very scared it will hurt. I went off the patch in September and finally got my period last week. They are going to put the IUD on Dec 8 even though I won't be on my period b/c they have been messed up. I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I had an abortion in 1993 and I am scared that them putting the IUD will hurt like that did when they dilated my cervix. I am also wondering what I can expect as I know that it has a little bit of hormones in it. My MD told me I should not have bad side effects because it has WAY less then the patch. Also, how long does it take to insert it? How long afterwards did you have to wait to have sex? Can you use tampons with it? I'm going to call the MD the Monday before and ask her all this but I am pretty nervous. The patch made me kind of nuts. I had been on it for almost 3 years and I had lots of stomach problems with it and it made me a little anxious. Has anyone had this from the Mirena? I think the hormones are a little different then the ones in BCP. Any information anyone can give me especially with the physical stuff will be appreciated.

Hi! I had mine put in when I was not on my period. It did hurt a little bit, but it wasn't really bad. My doc had me cough and when I did I felt something. Then there was a little discomfort when she actually put it in. I must have had a little bleeding because she used those little nitrate sticks, but I didn't have any more discomfort. I did cramp very minimally for a few hours. Nothing bad though. I've had 4 kids. Make sure you take some Ibuprofen or Tylenol before you go. I did have some spotting for a few days. I still haven't had my period, but that's because I'm still pumping breast milk for baby. It took just a few minutes to insert. And, then you're done. I did go back in 1 month for her to check placement.

I will be honest it does hurt but I didn't think it was excruciating and I've never had kids. Perhaps if you are worked up about it being too painful you can ask your doc for a prescription for something to calm you down; because if you are really tense it's going to be a lot worse. All in all the procedure took about 10 minutes.
My cramping is worse but it's nothing that an advil won't take care of and I have no period to speak of. The biggest complaint I have is that my breasts get super tender and sore on occasion. You can use tampons with it and I don't recall how long after I got it that I had sex again, I think I waited about a week.
I have had the Mirena for 3 years, at the advice of my doc. I had been on the pill and was looking for another alternative, the problem being I would have horrible reactions to the progesterone in a lot of the other methods. My doc said that the hormones in Mirena are localized instead of systemic so you don't have all the hormones going throughout your body. I also got my libido back, which the DH and I both loved! I wished I hadn't waited so long to get one.
Just remember that not everyone reacts to it the same way. Ask your doc and do some research on your own.
Good luck!
An IUD is very small and while it won't be pleasant, but it shouldn't feel anything like dilating your cervix all the way would have been like. Make sure you take 800 mg of ibuprofen just before you go to the appointment. That helps a lot.
My experience wasn't bad at all. The first thing they did was insert something to measure my uterus, it was a weird crampy feeling, but it really didn't hurt. Then a minute later they inserted the IUD itself. It was another weird sensation, but also no pain. They trimmed the strings, and I was all done. It only took a few minutes. It's recommended to have someone drive you to the appointment just in case, but for me I could have driven and was just fine. I had some cramps for the next couple of days, but ibuprofen controlled that pretty well. I actually had sex the first night since I was feeling so good.
I had horrible problems with depression and anxiety on the pill. Mirena hasn't been a problem for me though. My first period afterwards lasted about two weeks (it's normal to have some irregular bleeding for the first few months), but the good thing for me at least has been that my periods became so light that I never even needed tampons again. By the end of the first year, I might have a couple of days of very light spotting once a month and that's it.
Thanks for the reassurance :) I just hate people messing with me down there. My bf is going to take me and drive me home. It's good to here that people like it and it doesn't cause the same side effects as the pill.

I had an IUD up until a few weeks ago the insertion was a little painful but not to bad.
