Effectiveness - how long does it take?

I started BCP this month (OTC Lo) and I'm about halfway through my 3rd week of pills. My doc said to use condoms for the first month, which I have. However, today we think some leakage may have occurred.

My question is: does it really take the whole first month for BC to be effective w/o having to use a backup? Should I be looking into Plan B? I'm trying to remain rational but I'm new to all of this so I can't help but worry.

Any help would be appreciated!

The reason you should take your BCP for a full month with back up is because it gives you time to get used to taking your pills on time, and if you have any slip-ups over the course of the month while getting used to the regime, then you still have another form of protection to rely on.

As long as you took seven active pills on time in the week prior to the leakage, then you will have been covered.
