Was I taking it wrong? Confused now.

Hello. In August I got on the bc pill, Lessina, then I went back for a checkup and I was having problems with BTB so my dr. said there's a way to illiminate that so he put me on a different pill, so right now I'm taking, Portia, which has helped me a little more because the BTB has been a lot lighter than it was on the first pill. I had my 2 month check up appointment today...
He told me at my last appointment that they say it's okay for women to only have 4 periods a year now, I'm pretty sure he told me that I could take them continously without taking the placebos the last time so that's what I've been doing, but now he's switched me to a different estrogen-prog. pill and said to take the placebos so go 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4 etc.., then he said if that still doesn't work then to come back at my 3 month checkup to get it figured out otherwise call him and tell him if these pills work great for me (or call if it gets worse). He said he wanted to avoid taking the pills continously but that's what we might have to do if the new pills don't work.
I don't know if I was taking them wrong since I never took the placebos and didn't have a period. So now by taking the placebos I will have a period again, right? If this is correct I might have more questions on how and when to take them since I wasn't taking the placebos before.

Hi Stephanien719, welcome back!
Jill
Thanks for your fast reply, I've been looking forward to it! I'm not sure which one he just switched me to because I just got a new pack on Saturday so he told me to finish this pack then go to the pharmacy to start taking the new kind. I will let you know as soon as I find out though!
I'm just confused because I don't understand how my body will be fully protected after going on them for three weeks, going off of them for a week, then going back on them for three weeks, going back off of them, etc. Is it true that you aren't protected at all while your taking the week of placebos? Does that mean you aren't protected your first week of every new pack you take after taking the week of placebos? I know that bcp's don't protect you against STD's, but if a couple is fine with not using a condom (unless a pill is missed or for some reason like that), then how does the girl know when she isn't fully protected if she's been taking them correctly and when to use backup protection? See it's confusing me now because since I've never taken the placebos I was always fully protected, now I'm not sure when I will and will not be fully protected.
Will the pill periods be like a normal period, or will it be less days or more? I know it sometimes makes it less painful and less cramping but is that true for every female on the birth control pill?
Hi again Stephanie Hon,

Hi again Stephanie,
Jill
Thanks again!
"Going more than 7 24-hour days without hormones will decrease your protection."
How long would it decrease your protection for, and for how long?
As soon as you take the active pills again after your placebos will your hormones go back up again, or how long does it take for your hormones to go back up after taking the week of placebos?
I'm just not used to taking the placebos yet because I haven't since I started using BCP's so I was always 100% fully protected, now I'm not sure if I will be since my hormones will drop on the placebos then go back up again when I take the actives, I'm not sure how the hormones work with how fully you're protected.
Thanks for being patient with me and answering all my questions!
