Going off Alesse to Yaz or Ortho-Lo.

Hi all - I've been on Alesse for at least 8 years with no issues and is the only BCP I've ever been on. I don't have any complaints about it but since Wyeth has it on back order and it might be gone forever, I have to change (by tomorrow when I'm due to start since the Pharmacy just told me this news!). Anyway, I called my doctor because the pharmacy said they could give my Aviane but my doctor said she doesn't want me on a generic... Ok, so she said she thought I should try Yaz and she had some samples I could try and then we can see what I think when I'm there in February.... I had the nurse on the phone and asked if they thought it might help my headaches on day 1 of my period that I mentioned to the doctor last time I was there and she said she'd check with the doctor... when I went to pick up the samples, they had samples of Ortho-Lo there for me... Not sure why yet but I'm going to call tomorrow and ask before I start them.

At any rate, can anyone give me any info about the good and back of Yaz vs Ortho-Lo and how they might compare to my Alesse? I'm annoyed that I have to change but it is what it is. My periods on Alesse are pretty light but I'm not sure what happens with a triphasic vs a monophasic... I know what it means, but how does it affect you? I'm going to talk to the doctor's office tomorrow in case we decide Yaz is the way to go but wanted to check here too for some opinions... realizing everyone is different of course.

Thanks!

Thanks for the input. The only thing I can think of is that they changed their mind after I mentioned to the nurse about my headaches but when I was there in August and we talked about them I said that if I took some Excedrin when I felt it coming on, it was no worse than a bad sinus headache and was managable.... I have enough things to set me off with my job without having to deal with a pill that can cause mood shifts so I'll be sure to ask about that tomorrow when I call and keep you posted.

I talked to the doctor's office today and mentioned that I was happy with Alesse and I didn't know if I wanted to switch to a tri-phasic and they said that was fine. I got 3 months worth of Yaz from them and will start it tonite and see how it goes. I have an apointment for follow up pap test in February so it'll be a good time to have a status check with my doctor on how I like the new pill.

I am in the exact situation. I have only been on Alesse...I tried the Aviane...blew up with water retention...gained 5-7lbs in one pack. My dr gave me YAZ...so far so good. The bloating is comimg down. No headaches..stomach aches..nothing. So it seems to be a good switch. The estrogen is exactly the same which is probably why its a match for displaced Alesse patients. But I have a dr appt this week about taking it 24 days. My period is already light enough...I dont have huge PMS problems...So I dont need something that will decrease it even more. I am going to ask can I just take it the usual 21 hormone days.
We will see what she says.

I'm only about half way through my 2nd week of the first pack of Yaz but so far so good. No noticeable side effects but it'll be interesting to see when I get my period since it's the 24/4. I hadn't thought about only taking 21 but since it's the same dosage in all pills, I can't see why that wouldn't work. If you could let me know what your doctor said, that would be helpful. I'll see how mine goes for a few months but would be good to know if 21 vs 24 is an option.

Thanks!

My Dr approved 21 day only. So I skipped the extra 4 pills.

triphasic and a monophasic do not mix. I went from Alesse (almost 4 years) to Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo (1 week) to Yasmine (so far one week). The Ortho caused me to have headaches and nausea like you would not believe and heavy to light break through bleeding. I then called my doctor and he right away switched me from Ortho to Yasmine which is more like Alesse but with slightly more Estrogen (Alesse=0.20mg Yasmine=0.30mg). All is better actually. But due to the crazy change between pills my body isn't handling it well. I'm sure though that if you switch right away to Yasmine and not Ortho you should be fine.

Hope all is well.

Alesse is going away?

I've been on Alesse and its generics Aviane and Lessina for at least 8 years as well. Do you know if the generics are disappearing as well?
