risks of nuva ring at age 49

I just got a sample of Nuva Ring from my doctor. It sounds pretty good. The only thing I'm nervous about is the possible health risks, such as increased chance of breast cancer, stroke, blood clots, etc. I'm 49, so I hopefully don't have that many more years to worry about birth control, but I've never used any birth control with hormones. Does anybody have any input on if this is a safe method for me to use at my age?

Hi,

I’m using Nuvaring and I’ll be 36 next month. My first baby is only 8 months old:) I have heard that we can use the lower dose hormonal contraceptives through menopause. What did your doctor have to say about your age and hormonal contraceptives?

I think, but I don’t know for sure, that the hormone doses in Nuvaring are much lower than in hormone replacement therapy, so I think that there is not as great a risk in using it. I know that Nuvaring has a very low dose of hormones compared to other hormonal contraceptives.

I hope I’m right, but Judie or Jill should be here soon with knowledge instead of just thinking.

Thanks for responding. My doctor did say she thinks the Nuva Ring would be a good choice, being low in estrogen. I will ask her about how it compares to HRT. The other question I had was when it should be started. I was told either on the 1st day of my period or days 2-5. My periods only last about 3 days usually. Is it ok to start on the 2nd or 3rd day? The receptionist told me to keep it in the refrigerator until I'm ready to use it. I didn't see that on the Nuva Ring website. Should I keep it in the refrigerator or just at room temperature? Thank you so much. It's nice to have a place to go to ask these questions.
