Virgin needing Birth Control?
| Wed, 12-20-2006 - 11:22pm |
Hello Ladies,
I just wanted to know if I should get on Birth Control: I'm 18 and still a virgin, but every time I even talk about a boy my mom says I need to get on the pill. The rest of my family also says I should get on the pill. I know that I 'd have to get a pap smear to get it,so is it really going to hurt since I'm a virgin? My periods are always irregular,so will the pill help it be more on time and lighter at that.
Thanks

Hi miss_thing88, welcome to the Birth Control board!
Jill
Hello
I was a virgin when I was put on the pill. I had very irregular periods (only 3 to 4 times a year and they'd last anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks) and so I was put on the pill. Well, I say it did wonders, also it helps with acne and can really help with PMS if you get it. Pap smears aren't painful at all either, I felt nothing and everything was fine. Really, it's up to you and only you to decide whether or not you want to be on the pill, and if you do decide, talk to you doctor.
Hope this helps.

The pill should definitely help regulate your period. Don't worry - besides doing its "birth control" job, the pill has a lot of other uses. I too was a virgin when I got on the pill. However, the pill has been great for keeping my period a lot more manageable. Before the pill, I would spend a few days before my period through my period usually curled up in bed in the fetal position. I had severe cramping issues and nasty headaches. That was a decade ago. The pill has reduced those cramps for me to next to no cramps, and the headaches have also subsided.
Thanks Ladies,
Now I feel a bit better about getting birth control and I will post back any further questions or info I have on it. I guess I was a little freaked out about the actual process before it then actually getting on the pill, but it seems like it is totally going to be worth it.
Thanks

I was on birth control because I had extremely irregular periods because of a thyroid problem. I was on the pill for about 3 years and it helped a lot. My cycles were about 3 days on the pill, but it differs for everyone. I did not need a pap to get a prescription, I got it from my regular doctor. You should ask them first, because technically you dont need a pap until you are sexually active-at least thats what my doctor told me. Look into it. I too was a virgin and still am. Even if you dont have a bf its a good thing to go on because you will know when your period will be. Good luck!!!

One thing to take note of, a lot of women don't have intact hymens by the time they reach their late teens.
The pap smear has always been a little uncomfortable, even after having sex. I think that the amount of pain you experience can also have to do with how tense you are while you are getting it done. The more tense you are, the tighter your muscles will be down there. Some women are not as sensitive to that, so it may not hurt at all but it will be uncomfortable. Don't worry, it's quick and the doctor will be as gentle as possible...It's better to be safe on birth control than to have an unwanted pregnancy.
As for the method, I honestly recommend Depo Provera (Aka: The Shot). Rather than having to remember to take a pill at the EXACT SAME TIME EVERY DAY, the shot is given either in your arm or your butt once every three months at the doctor's office. And, it's 99.99% effective, that's more than the pill! If you think you will have sex any time in the future, I suggest getting on birth control to be safe. It will be worth it in the long run, and you won't have to worry if the condom breaks.
See that sounds like a good idea! I'm not a real "routine" girl because I like to sort of do things on my own time when I want to do them, so this Depro-Vera-Whatever-shot sounds fantastic!!!
I guess I should stop being a baby and get it done already ey?
