Anyone ever have ovulation pain on BCP?

This is worrying me a little. I'm on the first week of the third month of OTC-Lo. I got my last period 3 days before I was to begin the "reminder" pills. I started having ovulation pain about 12 days after my period started. Back when I wasn't on BCP and tracked my cycle with my temps, I almost always ovulated on cycle day 12 AND had ovulation pain.

This current pain was very obvious and lasted for a day and a half. I haven't missed any pills. Actual ovulation would be very rare, yes? What would account for the pain, though?

Ironically I was just wondering the same thing! I'm on my third month of a generic loestrin and experiencing what seems to be ovulation pain. I'm on my second week of the active pills and it's making me nuts! It didn't happen the first two months...what could be causing it? It feels almost cramp-like on the right side. During the first week of active pills I was having back cramps...

Hi Luna,

I have been taking ortho-cyclen for almost 9 months now. Out of those 9 periods I have only felt ovulation pain for 2 cycles. I think because the pill works in two ways one by impeding ovulation and 2 by changing mucosal conditions to impede sperm survival that is quite normal to still ovulate every once in a while. What I have done is to use condoms along with the pill those 2 times I have felt ovulation pain. If you have been taking your pills as recommended you should be fine. To be honest I miss the ovulation pain because before BC it always let me know that my cycle was going well. I have nothing against birth control pills but at some point I hope to change to a more natural method.

Hi, Luna,

No, you aren't alone. I used to have ovulation pain (mittelschmerz) nearly every month. Now that I'm using the pill I have it maybe once every five or six months, I guess . . . but the pill does have two backup systems for in case you ovulate. One is to make the mucous thick so his sperm can't get in, and the other is to thin the lining of the uterus so the egg can't implant even if it's fertilized. (If you believe that life begins at conception, you may have trouble with this one, though.)
