considering Mirena or BCP

Hi everyone. I'm new to this board and I wanted some feedback. My boyfriend and I have been together for 3 years and we're tired of using condoms. I've been reluctant to try hormonal birth control because I've tried many different brands in the past and always had a hard time with side effects. I've been off the pill for about 8 years now and have been much happier. However, my boyfriend has been complaining about the condoms lately and I think our sex life would be much better if I could find a more convenient method of birth control. I'm also having some other problems that could be helped by the pill (really heavy periods, irregular periods, and bad PMS). I know the pills have gotten much better in the past 8 years since I was last on it. I've had a couple of doctors also recommend the IUD Mirena. They said it's good for people who hate taking hormones. I'm 33 and just started my PhD so I have no interest in having children for the next 5 years. Does anyone have experience with Mirena? How about newer birth control pills that have lower side effect profiles?

Thanks.

I used the mirena for about 3 1/2 years and loved it.The "problems" came in the first 3-4 months (longer/heavier periods) but they got easier after that and by the time I had it removed I had basicly stopped having periods-at the most I'd spot for a day.It took a while to get to that but I was very happy with the mirena.GOOD LUCK
