IUD & spotting instead of period
| Thu, 01-18-2007 - 6:36pm |
I have the paragard IUD (no hormones)which has been in place since July 2005. My periods are somewhat heavier, but not obnoxiously so. I generally get a period every 32 days. Although recently they are showing up around day 29 or 30. SO on day 29 this month I started to spot. Just in the a.m. when I first went to the bathroom and it was brown. Typical for me to spot 2 days before period. Well, it's now day 7 of spot. Every morning there she is, brown on the tp. Yesterday I also had some red and again this morning there was a red spot in my panties so I thought for sure AF had made her arrival. Nope.

Only had my Paragard since September 06 and only 1 AF since then (still bfing) so no help to you here. Not sure how old you are, but if you're anywhere near perimenopause you might just be having one of those irregular months that can go along with that. If you're having a lot of stress or physical illness lately it could be affecting your cycles. I wouldn't think there would be any reason to worry, but if it were me, I'd probably call the next day they're open, just for a professional opinion.
Let us know what happens.
Hope things all turn out well!

Hi Barb, welcome to the Birth Control Board!

Hi boyz0305,
It's possible that you didn't ovulate this cycle, and so your period hasn't arrived. The spotting you are experiencing could be an anovulatory bleed, which is caused by the lining building up to the point that it becomes too thick, and starts to shed. Some women find that they bleed heavily, some bleed only lightly, and some bleed just like they would with their normal period. It is normal to have an anovulatory cycle every now and again, particularly if you have been under stress, or have been sick.
If you have developed an ovarian cyst, or have a hormonal issue, this could have upset your cycle. New medications sometimes upset our cycles as well. Bacterial infections can cause spotting as well.
However, seeing as this has never happened while you've had your Paragard, it's a good idea that you're going to your doctor, just to make sure everything is OK.
I didn't call the doc today b/c I was chicken. I am 33 yo with 2 boys. I was more concerned about possible infection rather than pg b/c I kow it's like 99% effective. BTW I tried to reach the string today and couldn't???
It could be possible that you're about to ovulate now, and that your cervix has risen up. Either that or your strings have wrapped around your cervix. If you squat down and try to reach them, but still can't, then it's likely that you're about to ovulate.
If you can reach your cervix, but can't find your strings, you might want to visit your doctor and get checked out, in case your IUD has shifted.
