Hellooo. I post on the May06 board.
I currently have the Mirena IUD in place. Heres my problem. Ever since I got it my sexdrive flew out the door. and it was awesome before.
I just was at teh OB on tues. about that and possible pg(!)., and she found like 5 cysts on my ovaries, due to my eggs releasing and not having anywher e to go.Its painful, including during sex.they were also giving me fake pg. symptoms.
Dh can also feel the strings, which kind of irks him.she said she could trim them but then they might poke him!eek!
I got preggo on OVcon35(BCP)., and i seemed to do ok w/ otherwise.
Before that i was on orthotrycyclenlo and it made me a crazy b!$*#!after her birth i was on micronor while BF and then the ring, which also made me nuts.
I'm thinking of getting into NFP, and just using condoms while fertile..or possibly going on something like Yaz..we want to ttc in November.. please i need suggestions!!
thank you so much and sorry for the length!

Hi cutensweet96, welcome!
Jill
Hi cutensweet96,
As Jill said, NFP or FAM are very effective when the rules are followed correctly. NFP is when sex is avoided during fertile times of the month. Rules followed correctly, it's as effective as the pill. FAM is when a barrier method is used during fertile periods, and if you do this, then the effectiveness goes down to the barrier method used. If you use the barrier methods properly, then you shouldn't have any problems, however.
NFP/FAM take a bit to learn, so relying on it straight away wouldn't really be an option, particularly if start as soon as your Mirena is removed. I had my Mirena removed in August, and am into my second month of charting. The first month, my cycles were still off, even though I'd had my Mirena removed four months prior. With the help of herbal supplements, things seem to have improved this cycle. So what I'm saying is, you would probably find that your cycles are a bit wacky when you first have the Mirena removed, and it would be difficult to know for certain when you are safe to have unprotected sex. It could take a few months for things to settle down, and you might find that you aren't comfortable going without a barrier method until you're certain that your cycles are back to normal.
Also, if you had irregular cycles in the past, these will return, and this can make it difficult to chart until the issues are resolved. Because you have five cysts on your ovaries, that could also mean it takes your body longer to correct itself, even if you don't normally have irregular cycles.
If you want to know more info about NFP/FAM, I suggest you read Toni Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" before you decide for definite that you want to go with this method.
I also want to add that seeing as you are looking to TTC in November, then you are less likely to follow the rules correctly and are more likely to take more risks, because you won't be as worried if you fall pregnant as someone that is truly trying to avoid. So you need to factor this into your decision.
Another thing to think about is, if you decide to go on the BCP until November, instead, you need to be aware that you might not fall pregnant straight away once you stop it. Although you fell pregnant on Ovcon35, there are different hormones in Yaz, and your body may react differently to the progestin in Yaz. Charting once you start to try to conceive would be a good idea if you do have problems getting pregnant, as it will help you to identify when you are approaching ovulation, and thus time intercourse for the right days.
Finally, once you have the Mirena removed, you will probably start to notice a difference in how you feel relatively quickly, but don't expect your sex drive to come back full force in a short space of time if you decide to go on a BCP.
