How to lose weight on BC

I take the depoprevara shot once every 3 months for about 1 1/2 year now. It started after I had my first baby. I'll explain a bit so maybe someone can give me some advice. I gained 32 pounds while pregnant. I was 152 pounds and went down to 125 after having my son. NOW i weight 140 how did that happen. I started to exercise and eat better but the weight stayed at about 130 for the longest time. I also smoke so I either smoke or eat but when I try to quit smoking for about a week I gain 10 pounds I'll start smokeing again and lose the 10 pounds but I think its the birth control that wont let me loose any more weight im stuck at 140 no matter what I do.. does anyone have any advice.

Hi ashleynbaby,
The Depo Provera shot is the only birth control that is statistically proven to cause weight gain, so that is probably the reason why you can't lose the weight. You might want to consider another type of birth control if you want to lose weight. Also, if you do stop using Depo Provera, be aware that the hormones take a while to exit your system, so you will probably struggle to lose weight right away.
The FDA does not recommend that the depo shot is used for longer than two years, because it causes irreversible bone density loss, which can lead to premature osteoporosis. So make sure you're taking calcium supplements.
In my experience, unless I exercise 6 days per week for 30-60 minutes, I will gain about 7 pounds per year. Apparently this is common on or off the pill.
You also might try eliminating all salt (or most of it). Stay away from stuff like Lean Cuisine and Campbell's Soup which is loaded with salt. I noticed that when I restricted my salt intake I lost 5 pounds in 2 days and it stayed off till I started on the salt again.
Buy a Babyjogger and get to walking! :)
