Questions to ask re sterilisation

I'm in the process of considering female sterilisation.
Any one with a list of questions they found particularly useful when considering this?
Helen

Hi kiwihelen2007, welcome!
Jill
Hi.
I had a tubal ligation on December 15th. I didn't really have a list of questions when I went in to talk to the doctor though. I had researched the procedure online and seemed to think I had all the information I needed when I went in.
The most difficult thing for me was finding a doctor that would do the procedure for me because I had never had a child.
If a tubal is what you are considering and would like any information from me about what I went through during and after mine, just ask.
While I don't need this forum for it's information on birth control anymore, I do still check it regularly just in case anyone is posting about TL.
Hi Melissa,
Thanks for your reply. I am also doing the research bit, while also discussing it with DP as well. He is mulling over whether he would be willing to have a V...he had said he is unkeen for me to have a general anaesthetic and all that entails unless there is no other option - but given his feelings on the cat getting his wee snip I am not sure the DP feels totally comfortable about the idea of being "neutered" LOL!
I too have no children and at 36 am increasingly clear I don't want them but know my body really doesn't like any of the hormonal contraceptives - and for various other reasons I can't use barrier methods easily or a non-hormonal coil.
I'm totally dreading raising this with my new GP here in the UK...it is such a hit and miss thing as to how doctors react to the request and part of me feels that my reasons for wanting a permanent control over my fertility are my own business...as long as my DP and I agree then why should I even have to explain them to anyone?
I am looking at Essure as well...what decided you on a TL instead of or was Essure not an option?
Helen
Thanks for the links and the reply.
This post-tubal ligation syndrome is kind of interesting.
My own experience with the implanon reflects how hard it is to separate out different issues - my first implanon was fantastic, my second one was awful with lots of break-thru bleeding and the only difference was my age and a more stressful lifestyle.
I very much doubt I will have regrets about permanent sterilisation...will probably just celebrate with a wicked weekend!

I originally wanted the Essure procedure too because I was nervous about the anesthesia.
The main reason for changing my mind and choosing the TL was that the doctor I found to do it said I would still be given general anesthesia.
So I figured if I had to have the anesthesia anyway, I might as well do the procedure that is effective immediately, instead of waiting 3 months for Essure to take effect and have to stay on the pill.
I had a hard time finding a doctor that would agree with me on my reasons for wanting this done. Most would not even discuss it with me and told me flat out "No" on the phone when I asked about it. This doctor agreed to a consultation and after sitting down with me and realizing that I actually DO know what I want told me I was a grown woman and my wishes should be respected.
I hope your doctor understands and feels the same way mine did after you sit down and talk with them.
If you have any more questions let me know...
