anyone use the sponge??

I have just started dating someone new after a long-term monogamous relationship. I am considering using a non-hormone birth control option (ie. diaphragm, cervical cap, sponge). I am not a fan of condoms and prefer to take matters into my own hands (I have a doctor's appt coming up and could be fitted). I know we need to have the STD/exclusivity/BC discussion and plan to use condoms until that time. But can anyone give me any feedback on their experiences with these methods.
I am particularly interested in the sponge since it doesn't require fitting or a prescription. Also, I read a posting that the guy can taste the spermicide during oral sex with the sponge, is this true?
Thanks

You should talk to your new partner about birth control, and make sure you're both on the same page about what level of risk of pregnancy is acceptable. The sponge isn't that reliable if this would be a bad time to get pregnant. It's got a pretty high failure rate of 9-16%, and if you've previously had children then the failure rate is as high as 20-32%.
