Progesterone only pills?

hi. I've been on Yasmin now for about 4 months after taking a break for a few months.
well, for the past month or so my blood pressure has been high and it just seems to get higher by the day! I've never had high blood pressure before this and my doctor seems to think it may be caused by the Yasmin. she's keeping a close eye on my blood pressure and has even suggested I stop into my local fire station to get checked every couple of days. yesterday it was 162/100, which is super high! of course, knowing it's that high makes me even more agitated.
I'm seeing my doctor again on friday...she had suggested before that if she's convinced the high blood pressure is caused by Yasmin, she may switch me to a progesterone only pill, because it's the estrogen that causes the high blood pressure.
I've been researching this type of pill online and it seems like a good idea. the only reason I'm taking BC pills are to regulate my periods...my husband has had a vasectomy so I'm not worried about becoming pregnant.
does anyone have any experience taking this "mini pill"? any unusual side effects I should know about?
I really feel like the Yasmin is causing my problems and need to switch soon...
thanks...

The first thing you need to understand is that the pill doesn't regulate your cycles the way you probably think. It suppresses your natural hormones, prevents ovulation, and the period you get from being on the pill is simply a withdrawal bleed caused by the drop in hormones.
Have you ever looked into what causes your irregular periods? There are many things that can cause these, and if there is a way of treating the issue without using birth control, then that would be easier than finding a birth control method that works for you.
The POP will not regulate your cycle like the BCP. POPs only prevent ovulation about 50% of the time, so you will find that your irregular periods will probably come back. You have to take the POPs on time every day. The window for being safe is a lot smaller with a POP. Breakthrough bleeding is a common side effect of POPs, and if this is the case, it would be hard for you to determine if it's the POP causing your bleeding, or if it's your natural cycle playing up.
Hi spacepickle66, welcome!

Don't have any advice for you on the mini-pill (progesterone only), except you have to take it at EXACTLY the same time every day (or within just a few hours of it). And, no skipping a day or you've got to use back-up.
I took Yasmin for a few months about 3 years ago and it caused me to have high blood pressure, too. Mine did go away after I stopped taking it. Just wanted to give you some hope that it probably isn't a long term problem. I also had the high blood pressure when I was on Welbutrin for a while, too. When I'm not taking anything I don't normally have it.
Best wishes!
