Hello ladies! I am new to this board.....I have 2 children ages 5 and 8. I have had my copper IUD since just after my youngest son was born...so approx 5 yrs (he'll be 6 in june). This has been my first experience with an IUD....and overall I have to give it an A for awesome. Nothing to think about...no real disruption of my monthly cycle....keeps spontaneity at an all time high. My new DH and I are considering having a baby...and I am a little nervous about #1 - how uncomfortable the removal will be...#2 - is there typically any problems with scarring or damage from removal ...I thought I had read somewhere about the tissue overgrowing the IUD and making it difficult to remove or leaving scarring which could affect ones ability to get pregnant. I am 34yo and if we decide to have a baby this will for sure be my last planned pregnancy....I will probably get my tubes tied afterwards. I just like to know what I am up against ...I honestly didnt think this (having another baby) would ever really be an issue...but after my divorce and remarriage...well..here we are.
thanks for any input.

Hi. I just got mine put in last September. I tried to do some research on how it affected fertility before getting mine. While I am 40 and my youngest is 14 months, I was not ready (still not) to commit to a permanent b/c (sterilization) of either DH or myself. Yet, I wanted something that would possibly get me through menopause if I chose to never attempt pregnancy again. What little I could find ended up talking about the risks of infections and PID. And, IMO, that could just as easily happen without an IUD as it could with one. KWIM? I had a couple of nightmares about it even before having the insertion. And, when I finally rationalized the possibility of an infection even without the IUD, I decided to go ahead and take the plunge.
Good luck to you in finding out some information. Have you actually discussed the concerns with your gyn? If not, you might just start there.
