Hi,
My name is Danika and I'm new here. DH and I are at our wit's end trying to find an appropriate birth control method. I could go on and on about all the reasons that certain birth control methods aren't right for us, but in the interest of brevity, I'll sum up.
Basically, we can't do anything hormonal, we're not ready for vasectomy or tubal ligation, and NFP isn't right for us for a number of reasons. So, it's pretty much down to barrier methods. DH hates the condom because he says it makes him go down, and I have had no luck with the diaphragm or sponge...both of them I find to be difficult and painful to insert and especially to take out again, and having the spermicide in me that long tends to cause me irritation. Yesterday I was sore for a few hours after putting the diaphragm in, and this morning I'm sore again from taking it out. I almost couldn't get it out at all.
Help! Am I missing something? Is there a barrier method out there besides the diaphragm, sponge, or condom? I've heard of the cervical cap, but I'm skeptical that that will be any better than the diaphragm for me since I tend to have trouble reaching in and getting those types of things out. Thanks!
Danika

Hi danika_2girls, welcome!

Jill,
Thanks so much for your reply! An IUD isn't right for me. But can you point me in the direction of where I could find more info about natural spermicides? Also, do you know anything about Lea's Shield - if it's easier to use than a diaphragm, perhaps?
At this point, I'm not concerned with total prevention but rather just delaying pregnancy. My husband and I do want another child at some point, but ideally would like to delay pregnancy for another year or so. I am exclusively breastfeeding my baby and my period has not returned yet, so my chances of pregnancy are low right now as it is. Therefore, I'm okay with something that has a somewhat low effectiveness rate. In other words, if I got pregnant right now it would be okay, but not ideal so I would like a method that simply reduces the chances somewhat. Thanks again!
