Yaz BC Effectivness?

Hi, Some of us from the PMS/PMDD board are wondering if you know how effective is Yaz at preventing pregnancy?
Lots of us on the board are taking Yaz to treat PMDD--it's awesome for most of us, BTW, but some also need it to protect against unwanted pregnancy. Should women use a back up method while on Yaz to prevent pregnancy?
We have been reading all of the articles you have posted (Thank you :-) but are still wondering what failure percentage rate we are taking about.
According to the insert that comes with my latest pack of Yaz (I just got 3 from my mail in pharmacy) "the failure rate is approximately 1% per year (1 pregnancy per 100 women per year of use).
However the typical failure rate in pill users is 5% per year...when women who miss pills are included."
I am a bit confused. If I understand what is going on, low dose birth control pills have a higher failure rate and the FDA has allowed 2 or more per 100 women for the last decade. So women have been less protected for a decade and no one told us--or no one knew? It sounds like the panel is not willing to change things? Sorry, I just find it all very confusing so if you know anything and can help us better understand I would really appreciate it :-)
I guess the good news is that the rates of severe side effects might be lower. I guess that may not really be true either since the sample the companies use is not representative (we are not all thin, 20 years old, non smoking, with no risk of heart disease like the people in the studies).
Best regards and happy Yaz days

Hi Marcella, welcome!

Jill,
This is incredibly helpful. Can I post this to the PMS/PMDD board so others can see it? Or should I just post the link so that they come here to view your response?
Thanks so much!
