mireana iud vs nuvaring

I have always had terible periods. My midwife suggested that I either use nuvaring continueously and skip my period or get the mireana iud. Can anyone tell me the advantages of each and what I might expect for side-effects? I am concerned with using any hormone therapy and having nausea, loss of libido, acne, or vaginal dryness. Any thoughts?

Hi there,

Has anyone ever looked into the possible causes for your heavy periods?

Thanks for your reply.

In my twenties, I tried birth control pill after birth control pill. Instead of resolving the problem, I experienced every side effect imaginable. I had a laproscopic surgery and discovered that I do not have endo. I have not used any hormone therapy since. I probably do have fibroids as most women do, however, I have had heavy periods my entire life. I naievely thought that after the birth of my children that things would lighten up. i would like to address the hormonal imbalance, but I do not know how to do it. I developed acne after i stopped breast-feeding when my periods returned and am concerned with my history of sensitivity to hormone therapy that it will get worse. I also cannot afford to have my libido diminish any more if I want to save my marriage. I just want to get an idea of what other women are experiencing with nuvaring and mirena so that I can make an informed decision. I shouldn't have to battle with monthly anemia and cramps or bleeding through tampons in an hour...

For the record, most women do not have fibroids.

It is quite possible you have fibroids or polyps.

Thanks for the info.

I have been taking vitamins and a b-complex, but it sounds like potassium may also help. I am also wondering about magnesium. However, I also have IBS and am concerned that I might irritate it by taking minerals. I visited a Natropath last Spring who wouldn't treat me unless I stopped drinking coffee completely. She said it was something in the coffee bean itself, not just caffine. I drink 1-2 cups a day. I guess if I can quite smoking, i can stop drinking coffee. The difference is I wanted to stop smoking and I have no desire to give up my java. So I have hit a dead-end on that path for now. I will try detoxing my liver. I was considering endometrial ablation, but decided I should give either nuvaring or mirena a try before doing something so drastic. My husband has had a vasectomy so it seems quite silly to be using bc. I'm just concerned that if I continue down this path I will have a hysterectomy before I'm 40.

I don't blame you on the coffee thing - I need to give it up too, but I just don't want to ;-).

Endometrial ablation may be the way to go, particularly as pregnancy isn't a concern for you with your husband having a vasectomy, you wouldn't have to worry about having a tubal or the Essure procedure (you have to make sure you can't get pregnant after having an ablation).

I was re-reading your response and totally agree that I should focus on detoxing my liver and balancing hormones. Especially since I do not need bc. How does one increase androgen? Do you know of any supplements that help in balancing hormones? I have been taking evening primerose oil in addition to my vitamins. My energy has improved greatly and my skin has cleared up. (Acne is also a sign that the liver is not functioning well.) It used to be that every other month I had a bad period. I really concerned that if I do not get this under control that I will end up having a hysterectomy. My insurance will not cover endrometrial ablation and I want to give hormone therapy a try before having surgery. Any insight on how to balance hormones will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi ami-girl,

Be careful with the Evening Primrose Oil.
