Tubal right after delivery, or IUD at 6w

I am strongly considering having a tubal during the same hospital stay as my L&D of baby #4. My dh was supposed to get a vasectomy last year but you can see how that went. I decided if I waited on him i could end up with #5 on the way so I am thinking about taking matters into my own hands (well the hands of the OB).

My only other consideration is an IUD which in a way to me is more scary than the surgery for a tubal. Absolutely no more hormones for me. After one depo shot caused major depression there is no way I am messing around with hormones any more. I don't care how many friends have raved about that darn nuva ring.

So, I am wondering how bad it is to get one at the same time as L&D? Anyone? If I wait, I won't go back for it, I just know.

So its either that or getting an IUD put in at my six week appt.

Hmmm...

Thanks

Well I have the Mirena IUD so it has hormones. I believe that they are similar in the way they are inserted though, I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I went to my 6 week appt and had a regular pelvic done where my OB inserted it. I had mild cramping and bleeding that day. The copper IUD is good for 10 years though and has no hormones in it at all. So it is possible to have one without hormones. I can't feel a thing now that it's in and DH can't tell either.

Unless you are having a C-section I don't think I'd want to have a tubal done because it's actual surgery and I wouldn't want that done right after giving birth. If you're positive you're done and having a c-section then a tubal would probably be easy since you'd already be open.

Good luck

It's really up to you. If you don't want any hormones you can get the Paragard IUD that's copper. The insertion is not that bad. If you think you might EVER want to have any more children then I'd definitely go with an IUD instead, and not depend on getting a tubal reversed.

It's strictly personal preference, IMHO.

Good luck!

Sallie

p.s. congrats on baby #4. My baby #4 is 15 months old. I went with the IUD (Paragard), cause I wanted the choice, even though I didn't think at 40 I wanted anymore.

Thanks guys for the responses.

I am not so keen on the idea of surgery myself right after having a baby but with 4 kids when else would be good anyway lol?

I will give some more consideration to the IUD option. Dh will have to get over it if I choose that - he is quite excited now about me getting a tubal after his never making his appt for a vasectomy last year.

I will have to look up the failure rates of the two IUDs vs a tubal. Hopefully now that I am 36 and soon to be 37, my fertility is declining and that will help as well.

good luck....I had a tubal last year and the recovery time wasn't as bad as I thought....before that I had a IUD for a little over 3 years (mirena) and for the most part loved it-if you're sure you're finished having kids I'd say go for the tubal....but it's your decision anyway....good luck with whatever you choose and congrats on the upcoming arrival of the new little one...

Good morning,

So funny I read this post this morning... I went to my Doctor for my annual and, after having the Paraguard for just over a year, I've decided that I'm going for a tubal. I love everything about the IUD except that it has changed my period so much. My cycle is short, 23/24 days. That didn't bother me too much as my period would only last 2.5/3 days. I could live with that. After I had the IUD inserted, my period would last almost a week, mostly just spotting but going from 3 days to 7 really sucks with my cycle. Also, I would have random spotting anytime of the month, no way to predict. I'd love to leave the house without using a panty liner. I go on March 23rd for the procedure. Good luck with your decision.
