Is an IUD worth it anymore?

I had an IUD put in around August… Well I have been crampy and not comfortable at all. A couple of months ago I had issues and couldn’t FIND the IUD strings… I immediately went in and got it checked everything was good. Well like I said I wasn’t feeling so hot and just had Aunt Flo last week so I checked my strings on Thursday… they definitely felt LONGER, so I made an appointment to see Dr. I went in yesterday and Dr said that indeed IUD is “coming out” so he did an emergency appointment for first thing this morning to take the old one out and put a new one in. Well I get there this morning and get all ready (clothes off yada yada yada) and when Dr comes in come to find out they had pulled out the wrong type of IUD. Well he and the nurse scramble around, they even go to the Dr’s office next door to see if they have the RIGHT IUD… NO GO! I wasted 2 hrs to not have the procedure done. JOY! So now I have to use a back up method and then get this one taken out and a new one put in NEXT month. The MD offered to take this one out if it was causing major discomfort, but I know from the very first IUD I had in 4 years ago (Which I got pregnant with because that fell out of place too) that removal is just as painful as insertion so I’d rather just do it all at once. I like the IUD the first time I had it because it worked for 2 years before I got preggers. UGH!!! Now I don’t know if all of this junk is worth it… Maybe we really are done having kids and DH should just go get snipped… We have a month to decide if we are going to put a new one in, get DH snipped or have me go back on another form of BC. I hate pills because I ALWAYS forget, I used the patch and I gained weight like crazy.... anybody know if nuva rign is worth it? I'm thinking maybe I should jsut go back on the patch...

Hi cas2ilu,

Given your predisposition for having the IUD fall out of place, I don't recommend you keep using them. You have had two fall out of place now, so there is a very high chance the next one will do the same. Basically, it becomes a waste of money if you have to keep getting them reinserted, plus there is the high risk of pregnancy each time.

I don't have any experience with nuvaring, but hopefully some others will come into this thread and post to you about it.
