I just started ortho tri cyclen this month its my first experience with birth control pills. I did the sunday start and right now i'm on the inactive pills- just took my second inactive pill. I've been worried because I haven't stopped bleeding since i've gotten my period. My period usually lasts 6 - 7 days and around the 7th day I started spotting. I hoped that would get better but the light spotting continued on and when I started taking the last set of 7 active pills, the bleeding got a little thicker and I guess it turned into breakthrough bleeding? I called the health center but they said it's normal. Still, i'm not convinced. I know it's norman to be spotting and to have breakthrough bleeding but i'm worried my bleeding is lasting way too long.

I had the same experience when I first started the pill. My period lasted about 10 days with the last 4 or 5 of that being mostly spotting. Hang in there...it'll go away!

Just give it time! As long as it's not heavy bleeding (pad or tampon in 30-60 minutes), your body can keep up with it. It's very normal to have irregular bleeding when you start the pill, and you can have irregular bleeding for a couple of months before things straighten out.

Next month should be better--if it isn't, you might try one more month, and if that one isn't better then you can call your doctor and ask to switch to something else. The general rule of thumb is to give a pill 2-4 months to see if it's going to suit you or not, usually by then you know if you're going to have bleeding or not.

Good luck! I know it's hard to be patient.
